Has anyone seen the documentary "Overnight" about the screenwriter Troy Duffy and his dark, troubled relationship with Hollywood? I'd be interested in knowing what other screenwriters think about the film and him.

I actually netflixed this the other week. While I thought the documentary itself was pretty amateurish, I couldn't stop watching this guy who acted like he was the second coming.

In the end, I didn't feel one bit of sympathy for Troy if he's one fifth the prick he came off as being in the documentary. But I also thought Boondock Saints was rubbish, so he already had one strike against him.

On a more general note, I have a real fascination with these kind of stories, whether it's Don Simpson, Joe Eszterhas, or Troy Duffy. I think we all see and project a bit of ourselves on these characters in their rise to fame and power. However, I think it's a maxim that, if you have to get screwed, it's better to be screwed because you're a nice guy than get screwed because everyone hates you.

Just my .02 cents...

Boondock Saints, imo, was a mess. Not bad for a first-timer, but it's still self-indulgent Tarantino-wannabe material. Not that I could do better, unless anyone wants to give me 5-6 million to make a movie.

Haven't seen Overnight, but if I did I'd bet I would both envy and razz his "I don't give a f-ck" tendencies.

boondock saints sucked, period. One of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I found myself mildly entertained by "The Boondock Saints," but it is, in my opinion, the most homo-erotic piece of work that I have ever seen that ran for longer than 10 minutes. And there was a lot of guy-on-guy symbolism in "Overnight" as well. Which says a lot about the industry, in a way: This script, that has scenes that vilify women, Hispanics, blacks and cats -- and features shots of baby-soft boy butts and discussion about which twin has the longer ylang-ylang, was considered a white-hot property that some of Hollywood's finest wanted to star in! No wonder Troy Duffy thought he was the shizzit.
