Wes Craven + werewolves
What more could you ask for?
Well, a good movie would be a start.
The cursed development and production of this film is well documented (they shot half of it, dumped most of it, changed the story and re-shot a new film).
How could such an opportunity as this be squandered so badly?

If I remember correctly, Angelina Jolie was originally attached to this film. She might have even shot a few scenes before everything fell apart. The resulting film isn't horrific by werewolf film standards (see The Howling 2, 3, 4, etc. for examples of that), it even has a few funny moments, but it could have been a lot better. Overall, the gothic horror genre has been languishing in purgatory since The Howling and An American Werewolf in London came out in the early 80's. There have been a few bright spots since, but not many.

Can you believe Kevin Williamson wrote this? man, how the mighty have fallen...
It wasn't the worst werewolf movie I’ve seen, the 2nd act isn’t all that bad, and I’ve seen a lot worse...
But if you want a good Werewolf movie go rent Dog Soldiers, or one of the Ginger Snaps movies.

Several people told me to go rent Dog Soldiers and I have to say that I was disappointed. Given that I am a huge fan of Gothic horror, I was excited to see what I was told was a new classic of the genre. Instead, I got a crappy action/horror film that looks like it was shot on a shoestring budget for foreign television markets. Oh wait, that's probably because it was. Seriously, I thought Cursed was much better than Dog Soldiers, and I didnt' even think Cursed was that good. Basically, the Gothic Horror genre, and the werewolf sub-genre in particular, are all but dead. Van Helsing was crap. Underworld was decent but should have been MUCH better (although I'm probably biased by the sight of little ol' Kate running around in skin tight black leather). To find a decent werewolf film you have to back to 1981. I've heard rumors that they are going to remake The Wolf Man, and I have mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, if it's good then it will reinvigorate a dead genre. On the other hand, I don't want them messing around with a classic. It's a shame that no one can make a good film in this genre any more. For every "The Howling" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula", we get a hundred crappy movies like "Modern Vampires" and "An American Werewolf in Paris."

You liked Underworld? Huh… Well anyway, I thought Dog Soldiers was brilliant and yes it was made on the cheap but that didn’t hurt my enjoyment of it...
What about Ginger Snaps? It’s also low budget but pretty interesting as well... you should check it out if you haven’t already.

Is Ginger Snaps the one with the teenage girl werewolf who is running around killing everybody?

Haha you say that likes it a bad thing.
I thought the first one was really original and interesting...the sequels were eeh, not great not horrible.
And she was a hot teenage girl turned werewolf.

Hmm..I must have seen one of the sequels then, because the parts that I saw were not very good.

DOG SOLDIERS....groan.
There are also people who think BOONDOCK SAINTS is great.
Some things I will never understand.

Huh that’s weird… I just saw Boondock Saints for the first time last night, I rented that documentary "Overnight" and wanted to see what all the fuss was about...
I thought it was ok but I can't imagine reading that script and saying WE NEED TO BUY THIS MOVIE NOW, WHATEVER THE COST, as Harvey apparently did.
Sweet Lord o' Mighty! What a (werewolf) turd of a film! I had to chapter-skip thru most of the movie. Just painful! I knew there were problems during the production / post-production, but...jeez.
If Dimension dumped untold millions into countless reshoots, why did the end result have the aesthetic look of about a buck and a quarter?
And have studios still not learned that greenlighting a movie with a sloppy script leads to disasterous results? Has anyone actually read the Kevin Williamson spec? Was it any good and butchered in the Dimension Films grinder, or was it dog crap from the outset?
Speaking of Williamson, has his time come and gone? Is he and his style of post-modern screenwriting a relic of the late-90s? 'Cause it sure has lost a lot of its luster.
