Bidding war would be more like a mill against 1.5 ;)

really?

So, this is the norm for a spec out of the blue bought without competitive bids?

There's really no such thing as a "norm" for s first sale/spec without competitive bids.

It could range anywhere from a free option to big bucks. The big bucks would raise a few eyebrows, but this one is a nice payday that most of us would love to have, but not outrageous.

Sounds like "Young Scent of a Woman".

He had a script he co-wrote set up at Fox in 2001, then a few months later sold a spec for around $400K or so, "The Kick", (Weaver's first sale at Energy). So not entirely unknown.

broughcut,

Thanks. That explains it.
I'm sure it has happened before, but I didn't think that 200 against 400K was common for your first time on the map.

No bidding war. It went wide and was bought 2 weeks later. Writer had a ton of credits and was well-known and liked by Disney. The script is a comedy about a troubled kid that has to be transported from point A to point B by an adult hired for that purose.

Script was brought one week after it went out. Warners and Fox were also interested. It's basically midnight run with a kid.

yeah, but no one ever offered anything else... D's first offer was accepted.

Does this mean that if the script makes it through all the hoops and ladders that the total sale is $600K ($200 against $400) or $400K?
