Suppose you have a narrator giving voice-over during a montage? How do you format that so it's clear that the voice-over is to be heard while the montage is viewed?

V.O. first,then montage, or vice-versa?

MONTAGE OF JANE RUNNING ACROSS TOWN:

Jane Darts down a crowded sidewalk. People turn and stare at her.

Jane runs across a busy intersection. Cars honk.

Jane races across a lush green soccer field in the middle of a game. Players stop and stare.

Jane runs into a garage.

INT GARAGE - DAY

Jane leaps into a mechanic's arms. They kiss madly. His hands leaving black greasy hand prints on her dress.

Margie- have you seen "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome"? I believe there is something like what you are looking for there. It opens with a narration coupled with appropriate pics.

MONTAGE OF BLAH BLAH BLAH:

Blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah.

Thanks to all!

Deux,

Are you sure the action doesn't come before the VO?

SERIES OF SHOTS:

A baby is crawling on a carpet.

...............Mom (VO):
..........As Junior became mobile, he explored his world.

The baby is walking through a living room, grabbing everything he sees.

.............. Mom (VO):
..........He started to get into everything.

The baby is in a playpen.

...............Mom (VO)
..........We had to start using a playpen.

END SERIES OF SHOTS

Margie, it depends on how you are structuring it.

Is the action the setup and the VO the payoff or is the VO the setup and the action the payoff?

That structure is what determines which comes first. Obviously in the film they will be happening at the same time but for the reader you want to have that set-up and payoff cause and effect progression.

One note, I know that you just posted some random example but it is really a good example of what not to do and why VO has such a bad rep because your example simply repeats what is shown on the screen and doesn't add anything new to the story.

I know you would never do that but just in case anyone was reading this and didn't know it, you should never use VO to repeat what is already in the story, it should add something new to the story that does not exist without the VO.

My 2 cents.

Formatted just like a SERIES OF SHOTS.

MONTAGE(LEFT MARGIN)

Individual shots numbered (or) lettered at left margin.
(or)
One statement delineating the shots(exp.various scenes of Victorian London street life). Still numbered (or) lettered.

The Montage terminates with an
END MONTAGE along left margin if transitioning back to initial scene (if any) incorporating the MONTAGE, if not you can move directly onto next slug. For added punch you might consider a dissolve (or) slam cut for additional clarity if the situation warrants.

So a regular MONTAGE formatted in an opening scene (or) within an existing scene would be notated as;

MONTAGE

1.
2.
3.

END MONTAGE

(OR)

MONTAGE
1.
2.
3.

(Possible transition like DISSOLVE: (or) SLAM CUT: for added clarity appearing at right margin)

NEXT SLUG

(NOTE-Any (or) all of the above can include dialogue (or) AD LIB b.g. chatter (or) VOICE OVER NARRATION.

Best of luck.

What if the montage is during the opening credits? How would you write that?

FADE IN:

MONTAGE (Opening Credits)

1.

2.

3.

END MONTAGE

Something like that?

Forget about the opening credits. Start with a montage if that is how you want the "story" to start.
