- Oscar-nominated writer Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash) has been tapped to do a rewrite of Casino Royale, Sony and MGM's 21st installment of the James Bond franchise, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have brought back Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, The Legend of Zorro) to direct his second 007 film. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote Bond films The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day, penned the previous draft. The search for a new Bond to replace Pierce Brosnan is under way.
The movie's script is based on the 1953 Ian Fleming novel.
Haggis adapted James Bradley's World War II book Flags of Our Fathers for director Clint Eastwood, currently filming in Iceland. Haggis is set to direct New Line Cinema's Honeymoon With Harry, which he adapted from a novel by Bart Baker, followed by Warner Bros. Pictures' military true story Death and Dishonor, which Haggis also will write and produce.

It's just that he's become the most unlikely celebrity screenwriter. He had a lot of publicity with the Oscars, even went on Craig Ferguson when Crash came out. He's all over Brentwood magazine or whatever.
There's so few writers that become celebrities. Not sure why he's our poster boy. He just seems a little...nose in the air.

Unlikely? The guy gets nominated for an Oscar and wrote/directed one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year -- not to mention he's writing a script for Speilberg, and now the next Bond film. Not to mention he's one of the nicest guys in the biz. Your grapes seem a little sour, my friend.
What kind of celebrity screenwriter is more likely to you? Someone like Sheldon Turner? A young, hip, hack who's the biggest arrogant a$$hole who'd piss on you without a backward glance?

It's strange because he's not a public figure. Writers rarely are. Directors hardly are, too. There are other writers with just as much success as Haggis. So I'm just wondering why he gets all the publicity. Plus, he's a fairly fresh name to many. Just seems like the media can't get enough of him and I'm not sure why.

I'd ask his publicist.
When a writer gets "hot" outside of the industry, they usually have an active PR machine on their side.

I'd like for you to name me a writer that's had the same amount of success as Haggis and has not gotten any media attention.

I'm just saying, I don't see Charlie Kaufman chatting it up on a late night talk show. I think it says something about a writer who gets this kind of attention...like maybe he's seeking it out. And that's fine, I suppose. It's just not typical of writers. This is not a job for fame-seekers.

Charlie Kaufman gets a lot of print everytime one of his movies come out. But the guy is also a self-admitted social phobic, and if that's your definition of a writer's job description -- good for you and Charlie.

Haggis also crossed over into writer-director (aka auteur) with Crash, so you'd expect him to get more press.
