You are all familiar with the basic story architecture: A group of plucky misfits who don't always get along with each other must band together to beat back an unseen menace, one that picks them off one by one.
I can think of two right off the top of my head: The Thing, and Alien.
Others? Which is the best?

Jesus... I was terrified you had previously unseen Jar-Jar Banks photos.
How about: 90% of every sci-fi thriller made in the 80s and 90s.

Predator?
I hesitate to mention the "Tremors" films in the same breath...

You pretty much see the tremors creatures by midpoint, however, so doesn't quite fit the profile.

Well, we see the thing in THE THING pretty darn quick.
It's a darned *movie* - you've got to see the antagonist.

What was the name of that movie where the creature got loose in the musesum?
wait, I've got it. The relic.
You never do get a good look at the creature.

The original version of 13 GHOSTS (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053559/combined) was shown in theaters with "Illusion-O" filters. If you wanted to see the ghosts, you'd watch the film thru one set of filters, (enhancing the ghostly images), like Dr. Zorba's special goggles. If you were too frightened, the other set of filters diminished the ghostly images, (rendering them invisible). It was a marvellous gimmick!

I must agree with Bill, JAWS is definitely one of the best unseen menace movies.
I think how Spielberg filmed the movie and with the technical difficulties of the shark caused that feeling of never being able to see the monster lurking below. It was a great attribute to the movie.
