Has anyone seen this? It looks like it could be freaky, but the timing of the release makes me wonder if they dropped the ball story wise.

Maybe I'll wait and see how much it drops off from its $30 million take this weekend.

Bah! Another Hollywood "true story"!

Check out what story this film is supposedly based upon (http://paranormal.about.com/od/demonsandexorcism/a/aa090505.htm), (or inspired by).

It looks like it's going to be like any other "exorcism" film; but, I'll rent the dvd to see Tom Wilkinson's performance and to be able to properly put this "true story" down for the fraud that it appears to be.

Meanwhile, I should get back to work on my draft of THE WATSEKA WONDER, which is about a "true story (http://www.mysteriouspeople.com/Lurancy_Vennum.htm)."

What will that have to do with anything? When a film like EMILY ROSE opens this big and beyong expectations (i.e. the "core audience" came out in full force for the first weekend) a huge B.O. drop is all but guaranteed.

It's not necessarily a reflection on the quality of the pic. (USUALLY it is...but not always.)

the film is a mixed bag. Some good and genuinely scary scenes, and I found myself pretty interested in Emily's story as it unfolded. But the courtroom scenes dragged. Way too much courtroom drama. The "hey let's take the exorcist and turn it into law and order" approach was misguided. I enjoyed the flashback scenes of Emily a lot more. And the courtroom looked so bad, like a soap opera TV set, along with a few other locations, like this cheesy bar. Some of the dialogue here and there was pretty bad, too. I'd give it two and a half stars.

I liked the idea of the courtroom but the execution left something to be desired. Overall I liked the film and thought it did a good job of trying to elevate the story above a simple exorcism story and raise science vs. spiritual debate.

And it did make me jump a few times.

Do I go see this or The Man? Those are my choices this afternoon.

I would think EMILY ROSE would be your safer bet....
