Ok, this question is more of curiosity.

Was reading Lord of the Rings, obviously a director's script, lost of things a spec writer would not do, but most were clear in intent and meaning.

Then I see:

Fade up:

They go to a map showing Hobbit world.

What can "Fade up" possibly mean? I suppose when I see the movie I will have a better idea, not sure.

Yes, I have read my "starter limit" of 150 scripts, and this is the first time I've seen somehing that stalled me as to what is meant.

You've read 150 scripts and you don't know what "FADE UP" means?

It's the opposite of FADE TO BLACK. A black screen resolves to an image. It's more commonly written as FADE IN.

Ok.

FADE IN:

Is all I ever saw before.

FADE OUT:

on the other end.

FADE TO ( anything ) would be obvious.

Thank you.

I've read several screenplays, and several "how to" books about screenplays, and all I've ever seen was FADE IN. However... I was watching TV the other day (really, I was), and someone mentioned a TV SCRIPT (I'm emphasizing this), and they actually said, "FADE UP." So... it's possible the TV writers use FADE UP in the same way that movie writers use FADE IN. Yes? (I write movies, and I always use FADE IN).
