View Full Version : Two Qs: 'fade into' and signifying shot...

Hi. Two formatting questions, and thanks SO much in advance:

1. If I have a scene that I want to kind of fade a little before the next one, rather than just cleanly cutting, how do I signify that? I know that "fade out" is probably wrong...but do I write, "Fade into:" or something?
And which side of the script does it go on - right or left?

2. Suppose I have two characters talking, and one of them is describing a person to the other one. And as he's describing the person, I want to show a quick shot of the described-person dancing. Do I have to signify that in the quick descriptive scene, it's just a characterizing scene -- say something like "Signifying shot" or "Characterizing shot" or something...or do I just have the first character give his line of dialogue, switch to the scene of the described-person dancing, and then go back to the original scene?

Thanks!

Caren

The way I would do it:

1. In a spec script I don't use any Transitions. In a shooting script I would use "DISSOLVE:" right justified.

2. Have the first character give his line of dialogue, switch to the NEW scene of the described-person dancing WITH SOME VO OF THE CHARACTERS STILL TALKING, add a "RETURN TO SCENE", and then go back to the original scene.
