Is Julia Roberts the only actress that can open a movie??? Cam Diaz failed with "In Her Shoes", as it did only $10 million this weekend.

This was hardly a broad movie. Try to find me one guy with both of his testicles intact who wanted to see it.

Even Julia Roberts shlock like Runaway Bride and America's Sweetheart has more mass appeal.

Julia to the biggest extent. Bullock is a distant second, I think. Kidman's been so so. Wet behind the ears at comedy. It's tough for actresses. Tough to gauge their b.o. potential. Spotty track records for the vast majority of them. Julia is the only one who's been consistant over the years. Only a handful of actresses in history have been able to combine comedy and drama, critical acclaim and box office prowess in their arsenal. That's why her fee is so friggin huge.

Two that have been on the radar are Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't open The Grudge. The Ring opened The Grudge.

Jodie Foster seemed to open FLIGHTPLAN (and keep it on the charts). And I think she opened PANIC ROOM. I'd say she's at the top of the list right now.

It's funny: she works so infrequently, I feel compelled to go see anything she does (despite the fact that those movies are NOT my cup of tea).

I heard Tom Greene and Lance Armstrong wanted to see it...but when they got together, they changed their minds.

Roberts can open any film.

Witherspoon has proven she can open a romantic comedy and is probably going to take the crown from Julia as the queen of the romantic comedies.

Lohan can open Disney flicks.

Barrymore can open romantic comedies and chick flicks.

Kidman can open art films.

Foster can open thrillers/girl in jeopardy films.

Judd can open thrillers/girl in jeopardy films.

Lane can open middle age themed chick flicks.

Paltrow can open art films.

Bullock can open romantic comedies.

I'd say Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon. I even think Cameron Diaz can "open" a movie that has a wider appeal than "In Her Shoes." I *would* add Jodie Foster to the list, but she doesn't do much anyways, so as was already mentioned, I think it's her reputation and lack of work that allow her to "open" her films.

If her career continues as is, within 3 - 5 years Rachel Mcadams will be the biggest and highest paid actress.

So, then, it IS a broad movie.

Thank you folks, I'm here all year!

Lohan and Herbie Fully Loaded?

Barrymore and Fever Pitch?

Kidman and Birth?

Lane and Must Love Dogs?

Paltrow and Proof?

Bullock in Miss Congeniality 2?

All disappointing BO, from what I understand.

Lohan and Mean Girls

Barrymore and Never Been Kissed

Kidman and To Die For

Lane and Under a Tuscan Sun

Paltrow and Sliding Doors

Bullock and Miss Congeniality 1

Every actress has made films with less than expected box office returns but these actresses have made more films that have exceeded box office expectations and proven that they have a fan base that will come to see their movies just because they are in it (AKA being able to OPEN A MOVIE).

It's not the total BO that counts, it's the FIRST weekend. Actresses that can "open" can't promise a good film, only that the first weekend will be decent. And even in the films above, most of them did that.

Both Fever Pitch, Herbie and Must Love Dogs had 12 mil opening weekends. Miss Congeniality 2 had $14 mil. Not too shabby. Proof and Birth were released small so Kidman and Paltrow weren't really hired for their "opening" ability.

Oh, and I agree that Rachel McAdams will be the next big "opener".

The correct answer is none of them.

Opening a film means $20 or more in my book on the opening weekend. Tom Cruise and Will Smith can open a film. People will pay to see whatever they're in.

Julia and whoever else in that bunch does not have that kind of box office draw. They are popular actors but they cannot open a film.

I think the issue with Cameron is that she's not exactly chick bait; she's guy bait. She was not the draw for the audience for In Her Shoes: Toni Collette was, which is not exactly a box office guarantee of success. Well, if we're honest, Shirley Maclaine was the draw. I've seen the movie and recommended it to several of my friends (females, all) and, to a woman, they've all said "oh, I'd see Shirley Maclaine in anything!" and one of them said, "eh, I dunno about Cameron, but Toni Colette is always good."

It is still in the top five, and it knocked dead Helena Bonham Carter out of the running, didn't it?

Good point. The studios need to keep her in movies which are geared towards men.

Never looked at it that way but you're right. Sometimes you think chick bait is automatic for a woman has had any success in movies. So not true. Jolie may fall in same category.

Is Cam Diaz worth $20M (what she was paid for "Charlie's Angels 2")??? I think she must have got at least $15M for "In Her Shoes".

I think she must have got at least $15M for "In Her Shoes".

Not even close. She cut a huge paycut for the flick.

Diaz isn't even making $20 million a pic anymore, is she? I thought that was an isolated incident with FULL THROTTLE.
