I am writing a scene where an army scientist is wearing a uniform. The dialogue goes:
NATHAN:
I haven't really worn anything like this since academy training.

My question is do I need to do something like:
NATHAN:
(referring to the uniform)
I haven't really worn anything like this since academy training.

Is that correct? I wasn't sure how to go about doing that? This isn't a major script I am looking to turn in, it is just a fun little short story I started, but I would like to know for future reference. Thanks.

Tyler, the best rule when deciding if you should use this kind of parenthetic direction is: only use it when what is written is more likely to be misunderstood or taken the wrong way without it.

From your example I think it would be obvious from the situation and the dialogue that the character is referring to his uniform so the parenthetic would be unnecessary and redundant.

My 2 cents.
