Does anyone else find this really repulsive?
Title: Chapter 27
Log line: Centers on the murder of John Lennon.
Writer: Jarrett Schaefer
Agent: Craig Kestel of William Morris Agency
Buyer: Peace Arch
Price: n/a
Genre: Drama
Logged: 11/3/05
More: Alexandra Milchan and Artina Films' Robert Salerno & Naomi Depres will produce. Schaefer will direct. Lindsay Lohan and Jared Leto will star.
Maybe I'm the only person on the board old enough to remember where he was when he heard John was dead.
Since I can't believe that Yoko would cooperate with this, that means that the story will center on M--- C-----n, the bastard who killed him.
And in order to make the script work, the killer has to be interesting or compelling or symapthetic.
He wasn't.
He was a worthless little nothing who committed one atrocious act just for the noteriety. To reward that by making a feature film about him seems wrong.

I can't get ever forget the killing of John Lennon because he was killed on my birthday.
I have to say, I agree with you. When I read this, I simply couldn't believe what I was seeing.
And Lindsay Lohan is in it? That takes repulsive to a whole new level.
I hope somebody is smart enough to deep-six this project. Mind you, there may be a perception that the public is thirsty for sensationalism. They made a movie of the Bernardo-Homolka killings, which centres on Karla Homolka. The producers were hoping - pardon my expression - to make a killing with it here in Canada, since it was such a well known story here (less so in the US), but were very surprised when we said, "no, thanks". I think they banned it here in Ontario, out of respect for the families of the girls who lost their lives.
This movie about Lennon seems to be another of the same ilk, banking on sensationalism around a popular culture figure to bring in the a$$es. Shame on them

Although I understand your sensitivity to the concept, I have to say that I think it's still fair game.
I mean, you say that his killer isn't sympathetic. That's assuming a lot isn't it? How well did you know him?
You can make a character sympathetic in the telling of story without making him likeable. Is that your fear? That people will understand him to the point of liking him? I seriously doubt it. He killed a very beloved icon.
But we can understand what makes him the sick, twisted killer he is and gain a better insight of why it is that he did what he did. (This is all of course assuming that the story is told from this POV)
I don't know. I'm not trying to be argumentative. I just believe that everyone has a story. Even the scumbag that killed John Lennon. Heck, especially him.

That doesn't mean that his story should be made into a feature film.
I guess the repulsive part is that he did it for the noteriety, and nothing says "noteriety" like having Linday Lohan in the film version of your life.
I can see the value in a film about Hitler or Stalin. That's an evil that needs to be dissected and analyzed. This guy was just a nasty little headline-grabber. Hardly the stuff of compelling drama.

I'm turned off by it, too. More by Lohan being used to re-sensationalize a great tragedy than by the story itself.
Chapman's girlfriend was Asian in real life. Don't know if Lohan will be playing her. Don't care.
The only guy of this elk I'd want to see a movie of is Manson. Just to see what made him tick.

Don't a lot of killers kill for this same reason? Didn't Son of Sam do it for the notoriety? Didn't stop Spike Lee from making a movie about him.
As far as the Lindsey Lohan thing...well, that's a whole different argument. One that I'm not prepared to debate as I can't stand the chick.

Take comfort that it's not called "Happiness is a Warm Gun."

Actually, I get the feeling Hollywood is going for repulsive these days...
Title: Juvenile
Log Line: The most Caucasian man in America is sent to juvenile prison for a petty crime he committed as a kid. Suddenly this suburban drip is surrounded by 11-year-old bad-asses.
Writer: Mark Gunn and Brian Gunn
Agent: William Morris Agency
Buyer: Universal Pictures
Price: n/a
Genre: Comedy
Logged: 10/14/05
More: Pitch. Steve Carell, Mary Parent and Scott Stuber will produce.
Perhaps I wouldn't be so upset if I had not spent the last few years trying to expose the horrors of the juvenile justice system. There are two scripts that I know of circulating Hollywood (two different writers, both experianced with this subject matter) that expose the truth of these centers. They are "too dark". Of course! It's truth! Wouldn't it be great if we could all turn our backs, pretend it isn't happening, and not feel guilty about kids getting beaten, raped, and killed and could instead make a comedy so we could all say we didn't know it was happening? Oh wait, that IS what is going on.
Sorry to be a pain is the a$$, but this is about kids, kids hurting, kids needing help. It's hard feeling like there are only a few people in the world willing to stand up and try to help them. I just don't find it funny.
Repulsive is not a strong enough word.
(I do however find some comfort in knowing all the organizations out there to help these kids are already coming up with battle plans on this one. Good luck Universal)
