1. Can someone recommend a good book that covers the whole movie making industry ie. the behind the scenes workings of this huge machine which eventually churns out a movie, from the script, to finance, to the final product, etc.

2. Is there an online bookstore (other than amazon) that exclusively caters for the movie industry? I'm after a couple out of print books that I haven't been able to source from Amazon and the like.

Thanks.

For the first question, you probably can't go wrong with either of these (I haven't read 'em, but they've received good reviews):

www.amazon.com/exec/obido...X?v=glance (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/067175095X?v=glance)
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...X?v=glance (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/067175095X?v=glance)

Second question -- no clue.

If amazon doesn't have it, then you may have a challenge, because they pretty much cover the gamut for publishing. You of course can try www.writersstore.com.

Although every aspect is not gold, a viewing of the first Project Greenlight DVD set would be pretty informative and lot more accessible for getting a feel for the business. You can probably check it out at the library.

Try contacting the USC or UCLA film school librarian, who could probably steer you to some of the books used in those degree programs.

Hollywood 101 : The Film Industry by Frederick Levy. Thorough, up to date, and well written.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - looking into them now.

I ended up finding a couple hard to get books from Amazon.UK that surprisingly I could not find on Amazon.com

Thanks,
Jeff

I have a bunch of Michael Weise books, he's fantastic. Another good resource to have is the "...agents and managers" book by Skip Press. It's much much more than just another "how to get sold" book. He really get is into the meat and potatoes of the business and how things get made as well as listing hundreds of other resources to use.

A publisher that deals strictly with media is Focal Press. I couldn't give you a link because they have a really insane adress so just do a search if you want.
