I had the good fortune to meet Gregg Hoffman at a pitch session. He was working for a major producer (who shall go nameless) as their President of Production and was unhappy to be there that night. The lower level creative exec who was scheduled had to pull out and he was forced to fill in and listen to twenty or more pitches – enough to give anyone brain freeze.

But when he heard mine, he sat up straight and said, “Now THAT’S a movie!”

I broke all the rules and slipped him a copy right then and there. Two weeks later he called me from his cell phone while driving in L.A. traffic. He had talked his producer and Paramount into optioning it.

“Congratulations!” he said. “You’re getting in the door. Most people never do.” He went on to say, “The last thing I thought that night was that I’d hear a pitch for a movie I wanted to make.”

The movie was never made and Gregg left that producer shortly thereafter. He ended up at Evolution where he produced Saw I & II.

He passed away much too young this week at 42.

Thanks, Gregg. Thanks for getting me in the door. Most people never do…
