is it useful for a screenwriter to be regularly reading them (i.e. Variety, H'wood Reporter)?

i think seeing who's buying what is important but descriptions of some of the scripts boggle the minds some times. I think some people read the loglines and think "hell, i can at least write that" and that's not a good way to approach writing.

Abso&*^$#utely! I'd get the 2002 HCD guide, Written By, Creative SCreenwriting, MovieLine, EW, Variety, too.

And a really great service for only $30 bucks a year is www.moviebytes.com.

They list daily the scripts that have been sold. They also list pitches, novels, ideas...you name it. It's very current and everything is cross-referenced. Everything.

With Variety, HCD and Moviebytes as your tools for contacting 'those in the know', you'll get responses.

Yahoo has many of the articles from Variety online for free, and some of the Hollywood Reporter articles. Though it's best to get the real thing - all of the articles, the ads, the charts, etc - if you're a broke writer, reading the free version online will help keep you in the Hollywood loop. Not only will the information be helpful, KNOWING the information makes you feel like part of the biz.

If you had to choose one to subscribe to on-line, which would it be, and why: Hollywood Reporter or Variety?
