I am trying to learn screenwriting. What are some of the books that beginners should read and by beginner I mean doesn't have a script can't write a script etc. Also books on writing for beginners.

I checked out Lew Hunters book and Michael Hauges. Right now I am reading 434 it's pretty cool.

get trottier's "screenwiters bible", and mckee's "story" if you can afford it,then get seger's,field's,and then get screenplays.

And don't forget: READ SCREENPLAYS. Go to www.script-o-rama.com (http://www.script-o-rama.com) or www.iscriptdb.com (http://www.iscriptdb.com) and browse. Read final drafts for movies you've seen, just to see how it looked on the page. Read early drafts to see how much it changed before they shot it. Read scripts for movies you haven't seen, and make your own judgements for how well they would end up on the screen, then see the movie and compare your mental picture with the final product.

Books on screenwriting are great. (Some of them,anyway.) But nothing will teach you as much about screenwriting as watching movies and reading scripts.
