My script is out to about 15 producers (sent over the past 4 weeks) including one major studio. I just received favorable response to my script from a small prod co that has a had a few minor theatrical releases and a lot of direct to video releases. And, while just posting this message will probably jinx it, I just want to be prepared if they make an offer.

I don't have an agent but a colleague of mine says be careful not to jump at a deal that will end up as direct to video release because I'll be stuck in that rut forever. He says that once you've sold one direct to video it's almost impossible to make the leap to theatrical releases.

It's my first script and I kind of wrote it on a whim, but - if it's direct to video or nothing - I would like to get something for the script. Is it true that writer's get labeled and can't jump from direct to video to theatrical releases?

I've heard the exact opposite. Look up several of the more prominent writers on IMDB. Many have movies you've never heard of. I think it's still a step up that you will be a produced writer.

I agree with Jack. I've heard it's a good way to break into the biz. Actually, I think there was an article re: this topic not too long ago in one of the trade magazines - maybe Creative Screenwriting?

Okay, what is a reasonable amount to expect for a direct to video script? I'm not a WGA writer and have no other credits. It's a action/horror moster movie.
