anyone know what a first look deal is? what are the pros and cons?

The pro is having one. The con is not having one.

First look is an obligation of a smaller production company to a larger production company or studio that gives the larger company an exclusive time period where they get to look at the material (in this case, a script) before anyone else can.

The pro is that the company with a first look probably has a good relationship with the prodco. The con is that your script may not be distributed widely in the competitive market to generate a bidding situation.

A lot of small prodcos, management firms have first look deals with studios or larger prodcos.

Thanks for the clear explanation. I had a dream that a well-known producer wanted my script but couldn't get his hands on it cuz it was with another company that had a first look deal. Still, sounds like a good problem to have overall.
