John August has a pithy commentary on the sale.

35,000 new Final Draft users a year? And I thought this board was crowded.

Reminds me of the old economics lesson about the oil business -- wildcatters and small oil producers come and go, but there'll always be a Halliburton selling them equipment, making steady money hand over fist. The long-term profit centers in this business are scriptwriting software and the company that makes those solid brass brads?

I'm guessing they'll stop running the "Final Draft sucks" MovieMagic ads.

Attend the LA Screenwriting Expo and it glares at you on a depressing scale. 4000+ dreamers being sold a mule and a map. The numbers and odds say it all. Which is why the tone of most seminars is so formulaic and repetitive. It can be utterly depressing, except for the working writers who shatter the chasm between audience and writer.

The money, I hate to say it, is in mules...
