Hey everyone. Just got the quarter-finalist list today in the mail, and apparently Fade-In didn't recognize my genius...
Anyway, if you haven't got yours yet and are dying to know if you made it, just ask. However I'll answer right here in front of everyone so be prepared.
There were 2,200 entries and there are 460 that made the quarters.

One letter with all the quarter-finalists on it?
How cheap.
I have my problems with the Nicholl and Austin, but at least they have a little class.
I can just imagine what type of readers they used.
"Spare a quarter, bud?"
"Fifty cents if you read this script..."

Is this the fade in screenwriting contest that had the Oct 31st, 2003 deadline? I am now embarassedly confused as to which one I entered. My p/o that I kept mentions the above deadline, but did not really specify which screenwriting contest I entered. Can anyone help this confused screenwriter?

Sandy, don't be embarrassed. They have like 5 contests going on at the same time, all of them are the 4th, 9th, 6th, 50th annual something or another. I lost track too.
This list is for the 8th annual contest.
They really do need to fix that confusing stuff for us dummies.

Pie, I'm assuming since you haven't asked, you don't want me to tell you your results? You just seem pretty anxious. You can e-mail me if you'd like.

I just got my letter - my script has been advanced to the semi-finalist round. They will publish "a list of the semi-finalists and/or finalists" on their website after March 15th.

I made the quarterfinals with the my teenage "American Pie" like comedy. This is my first go round with contests. After submitting, I heard broad comedies don't do that well in the contest circuit, (as in winning or making the finals) does anyone know if this is true? In other words, am I wasting my time submitting this type of material to contests?

Congrats, Rawbry! I don't know about how comedies do. My eternally optimistic approach is go ahead and submit to the contests that seem right. But, that's me being intuitive and optimistic. Not based on hard facts.

it seems a broad comedy stands a decent chance in a competition that has a comedy division, like fade in or austin.
if i'm not mistaken, somewhere on the nicholl site there are stats on genres that have won.
best of luck to you rawbry.

The problem for comedies of any sort is that they have to be funny -- or they won't do well at any level in any situation. And taste in humor varies from individual to individual.
Of course, this applies at contests as well.
That said, the Nicholl has had comedy, romantic comedy and comedy drama winners, as well as one extremely broad comedy several years ago. Of that script, one judge who liked it noted that the script had something in it to offend everyone.

I don't know anything about Fade In as a contest. Does anyone have details on this?
