So how does this work? Are people supposed to give their managers and agents a little present during the holidays? What are we looking at spending here?

Ele-

I think you can just send a card or email saying happy holidays. You just started working with the manager and they understand about money, etc.

Once you get going, it really varies. A bottle of booze or something that you know they like (a book, etc).

And don't forget the assistants.

A Porsche is always appreciated. If you want to look a little down on your luck, a Rolex always makes a good, if cheap, impression.

Stick to an email. They don't open unsolicited Xmas cards.

I always send gifts to my reps and their assistants, usually flowers or a gift basket for the reps and cookies or a gift certificate for the assistants.

If you just signed with your manager and haven't made any money yet, Otis's suggestion of a card is just fine. If you have the money and can afford to splurge a little, you're free to do that, but there's no reason for you to feel obliged to spend a lot of money, or any money at all. Otis is also right that you should absolutely send a card to the assistant as well; he or she is going to be working just as hard for you. :)

I was honestly thinking of just sending a small flower basket...maybe $25 worth. And addressing it to the manager and her assistant. Good?

By all means send them the flowers, but make sure you also send them the bill. Talent never pays.

I think that sounds perfect.
