View Full Version : Devil's Deadline: Votes/results
Adam Isaac

Alright, there's a slight bump up in the Vote By date...
APRIL 6 ("Good Friday") by midnight is the new deadline for votes.
20 scripts in 11 or so days...you can do it.
Another DDer is following this contest with another great challenge, which will be excellent as well, so all the people who couldn't squeeze into this last one(like me), will be able to enter in the next one.
Don't vote until you read all the entries. And good luck.

Do we vote for just one entry or is it a 3 votes, 2 votes, 1 vote system?
Adam Isaac
03-26-2007, 02:46 PM
Just your #1 vote.
You can post your #2 and #3, but those votes only count as moral victories between writers.:D

My Winner: The Lake
My Honorable Mention: The Move
Remember -- don't thank me If I voted for you!!!!!!! -- keep it anonymous until after the voting deadline.
If I have time later in the week, I'll comment on each one.
Overall, stellar job people.:)

If everyone votes for their own entry we end up with a 20-way tie. But that won't happen.
Here's my vote and it's not my entry.
SOMETHING WET HAPPENS
That was juicy.

I thought one of the last minute entries might knock this out of
my number one slot but I kept coming back to its endearing characters,
its simple but memorable visuals and its seamless editing.
Although the writer could have been more creative and come
up with a title.
My vote goes to UNTITLED

BEIJING DETECTIVE: A MUSICAL

AVON CALLING - This is the only one of all the entries that I read feeling genuinely uneasy. Very believable premise. I thought the escape could have been more dramatic and didn't like the name Robert as Roberta, maybe Robert/a would have been better, but all things considered.
1st Place!
UNTITLED loved this. Clean, neat and crisp with a lot of good ideas.
2nd Place!
BOB'S SICK AND TWISTED TRIP TO NECROVILLE I feel this one represents the heart and soul of the thread. All the ingredients were there and you have to admire the writer for his fearlessness. It was obvious s/he had a lot of fun writing this which made it that much more fun to read.
3rd Place
An honourable mention to SOMETHING WET HAPPENS because I can't believe I didn't place it. The first few pages in particular were a real masterclass in screenwriting.

Honorable mention goes to "Untitled". I enjoyed this one too, wonderful writing.

Silver: Avon Calling
Bronze: The Lake

Wouldn't it be good if the forum had polls enabled? We could click radio buttons and see a graph after we have posted our response.
I think a lot of people must be feeling a good deal of satisfaction for their efforts, and are very happy that they entered the competition :)
Good one, Adam!

It was tough deciding between these two...
#1: Untitled. All around great story.
#2: The Lake. I liked the beginning and ending of the script a lot. The writer has a very poetic approach, which I like.
Honorable Mention: Losing Faith. I liked it. A lot.

My winner I desperately wanted to dislike. Two reasons...
1. It a little too novel-esque flowery at the beginning. Beautifully written however.
2. I HATE WESTERNS!!
(Added SPOILER WARNING....although if you're reading the votes before the actual shorts then you deserve one of Derek's patented slaps!)
Which made the fact I enjoyed this all more shocking. It's a new slant on the whole Vampire-steals-youth schtick.
If you haven't worked it out yet, my vote goes to the annoyingly good.
SOMETHING WET HAPPENS (although felt like a weak title considering the subject matter. Something involving Beauty/Baby/Oldage would have made for a more relevant title. My ONLY criticism though. Great work)
Honourable mention...
Good god....this could be a long list. I'm amazed by the quality of writing in this contest. Well done, Adam. You've officially, in my mind, hosted the best contest on DD to date (and the fact I didn't have time to enter disappoints me caus I wasn't part of it......oh well) There was barely one short I disliked.
Ahem.... but I digress. Honourable mentions.
THE MOVE
AUDACITY
ANOTHER SERIAL KILLER
DATE NIGHT
UNTITLED
AVON CALLING
THE LAKE
SEVEN
SCRATCH OFF
To be honest almost all of them really deserve honourable mentions.
Excellent stuff, really.

Something Wet Happens is good stuff. I regret not voting on the others that I thought had the story but lost me at the end OR had the story but I wasn't drawn in with their writing.
Everybody brought their game. This has been fun. Next time, I'll take it a little more seriously.:)
Adam Isaac
03-27-2007, 11:32 AM
I told you to at the beginning of the contest to bring the pain.
The next challenge I do will be different, but in the same vein. The ultimate motivation for me with these contests is to veer away from the traditional holiday, producer's topic, or the 'fun' contest. Hardly anyone participates regularly in those anymore. Sure, it's still fun, but it's not moving as many members to actually participate. The ones I'll host are Writer's Rules, so to speak. Essentially, you'lll get two thematic words from me, but the reward/prize will sort of tie-in with the thematic words I give you. This sort of does my work for me. I don't need to really be specific, or want to be specific. Specific rules or guidelines limit creativity, they just do. Specific rules and guidelines are the way of things in everyday life, some like-some don't. I don't like creative limitations, quite in fact, I dispise them. On a screenwriter's forum like this, there's a lot of different prizes you can give out to the one winner; well, some previous contests didn't take themselves seriously, and ultimately that affects the number of submissions. Three prizes=more entries...More entries=Higher Stakes...Higher Stakes=Better Writing.
So....writer's forum-writer's rules-writer's vote....the next one I do will either be September or October, and will be double or nothing in terms of prizes/rewards($100 or gift/$50 or gift/$20 or gift). Why is this idiot shelling out money and cash-prizes? Because money raises the stakes--even a small amount like what I'm paying. It's also a divider of forum clicks. I have read several popular entries from contests on here that just flat-out aren't that good; yet, they'll snag votes. You play for a little scratch...you don't get that kind of sh*t anymore. Also, Derek's no name on the bullet method for submissions is an excellent one. The game aspect of it is left outside my office door...now, you have to get just a little more conscious, because if you don't...you'll be sandwiched in between scripts that were better than before.
Yes sir, double the anty. Our first goal was (30) submissions, we got (20). No biggie, but our next goal will be (40) submissions, we have to get a minimum of (30) or I'm not going to bother doing anymore in 2008.:D

If it's okay with you Adam, First Prize $150. I'll chip in $50. I thought this contest was a lot of fun but for some reason a lot of the big hitters stayed away. Let's hope a lot more people make a conscience effort now that they'll enter next time so they're rarring to go when it comes around next.
Yes sir, we'll co-host it then. I'll PM you when I get back from lunch...I just had a possible theme for the next one: C. Pick your partner kind of thing, or even pair people up who write in different genres?
The big hitters won't ever enter. No time for it, and they really don't have anything to gain. Plus, they won't like losing to the no namers anyway.:D We might starve up some heavy on-lookers though.
If there's a mentality to always out-do each other and ourselves, then everyone wins.

I read my favorite as soon as it was submitted, not sure why though. No one else got an immediate read from me. I convert scripts to Courier New before I can read them normally. Even gave the writer a compliment after they submitted it, but I can't vote until I read the last three entries. Someone mentioned 'big hitters' earlier....I'm 90% sure this scribe is a 'big hitter.'
Great entries, folks. Several people responded who actually took the time to say they weren't able to enter due to busy scheduling, but really wanted to, because they enjoyed the entries so much. So good on ya, mates!

Ladies and Gentleman,
For your reference and information, I want to also tell you the names of the 3rd place contestants involved in this tie we're trying to work through.
THE LAKE- Penned by RyPa, and underrated writer who doesn't always much on the forums, but believe me...I know this chap...he's f*cking good. Really, he's on the same level as both habronic & Arroway, but in my opinion .....ARROWAY is a better than most folks on the forum who's work I've read. He comes from the World of Fiction, but I will NOT reveal his real name to you.
harbronic is way underrated on this forum. Dude is good. RyPa is truly who I would personally select for THIRD place.

The Derek will be a BIG part of all of our future competitions. Not only his monstrous phallic trophy, but also with his BIG experience of writing and helping out writers.
He doesn't even know yet his grand place in our next competition. I can tell you all though that myself and Mister Q are achieving what 90% of you have already said is impossible. I'll tell you this...if think I won't be a Producer at some point in my career, you're ****ing out of your mind.
There's nothing that CAN'T be done. And it is for YOUR BENEFIT we're doing this. The pros will become my ho's on this one, for no other reason but to aide in our quest to get YOU to bust out of whatever shell you might have around you and your ability as a ****ing writer. This only the beginning...expect a new trend to develop for everyone who throws a short contest. This is serious business, and should be justified by the reward offered. IF ANYONE STEALS SOMEONE'S SH*T, YOU'LL BE DIRECTLY DEALING WITH ME, AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT....trust me....I will take your privacy away from you quicker than you can say,"Bob's your uncle", and I can destroy every insidious plan you have without ever meeting you, so don't you ever **** with me. Sometimes pro advice doesn't help writers who have it in themselves to be better than whoever's giving the advice anyway. Know what I mean? PAY THEM!!! We all deserve it anyway....
Isn't it ****ing great?? Writing? What a blessing....don't you ever ****ing stop!!!

you and I will wear masks from here on in, playa.

Big surprise...J OFF COURSE....wrote BEIJING DETECTIVE.
Good writers, write good sh*t.
I didn't see that one coming. JoffC, it was very good of you to post a link to the music you wrote but next time I'm sure we aaaaaaaalll want to hear you sing. :)

Damn! I voted for Avon Calling to win. Next time I'll leave it late and be more tactical with my precious vote. And with a pseusdonym I could even vote for myself. Yeah, and I could schmooze with some of the other posters, send some PM's, use my connections to get votes and next time I'LL WIN!!! :D
We're above winners, Q.
That's far beyond the capacity it takes to win.....well, kind of, I guess.....
I'll show you on the next challenge. I'll put $50 on myself to get more votes than you get? $50....winner throws it in to the contest?
Ahehehe....

Will you slap me, if I tell you I have the same crush as you, on J Off Course?
I have a bigger crush on sc111(she's married), and I look like a combo of my second cousin, Josh Hartnett and Ashton Kuchar....will the finest femme writer please step forward, and PM me? I need you!!!!

Gosh, I've only entered two musicals in these Done Deal
contests and I've already pigeon-holed myself?
Damn, Hollywood is cruel.
Guys, I would have sang but my range is quite limited as well
as are your Dell speakers.
Now I'm off to the scripts section to read that BRAVE soul
who just now posted his musical comedy pages.

Would've expected such fighting talk to have been conducted in the civil manner of a PM dear boy. But now that you've decided to have this out in the open I'll tell you this: ROLLING PIN took me five hours from coming up with the idea to sending it out to you. THE BARTHOLOMEWS was a bit of fun and a healthy distraction from the re-write I'm bogged down in.
You haven't seen my A-game yet and by the time the next competition comes around I will have finished my script and be 100% up for it. I'll accept your challenge and look forward to claiming the bragging rights.
As for you and me having a crush on J off Course; doesn't everyone?

You pansies may have a crush on J off Course, but I voted for him.
Anyways, these are just casual scribbles I made as I read the contest entries... on first pass I didn't understand my #1 choice, but on second pass, I did. Usual disclaimer, everything's my personal opinion, just 'cause I say something don't mean I'm right. Feel free to argue with me.
THE MOVE - promising first half, but turns into jealous deranged woman skit which didn't ding my bell.
ROLLING PIN - funny in places but there's no suggestion as to how Wayne could come back, and the 999 call is a damp ending. This could be something but it needs a couple of whacks in the right direction.
AUDACITY - those names made me smile and slap my head at the same time. :) Has potential, but the explain-everything ending lacks zing.
BOB'S SICK AND TWISTED TRIP TO NECROVILLE - delivered exactly what the title promised.
ANOTHER SERIAL KILLER - made me smile, good comic timing noted, tho' Blondie was just too dumb. Serious contender for a vote.
LOSING FAITH - pretty good if I may say so myself, alas not nearly good enough! :)
GRAND THEFT - first third was interesting, then it turned into another jealous deranged woman skit, which wasn't quite as interesting.
BEIJING DETECTIVE: A MUSICAL - the title made me want to run a mile, but the style and visual details pulled me in, I can guess the author but that's not what gets this script my ONE AND ONLY FRIGGIN VOTE FER CRIPE'S SAKE! When you take away the lyrics (sorry, J... but I'm on dialup, I couldn't play your music) there's a story here supported by some nicely done subtle naunces, which I liked lots.
DATE NIGHT - a pair of lunatics squabble and fight, then murder their neighbor for no sane reason. Too weird.
MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING - I repeat, pretty good if I may say so myself, alas no one else seems to think so! :)
UNTITLED - reads OK, tho' the plot veered off into another jealous woman skit, but at least this one got five mill out of it.
AVON CALLING - clever, but didn't quite grab me, I'm still trying to figure why, possibly the Mary Kay "punchline" let me down?
MANHOLE - funny and cute, tho' I might have appreciated an "entombed" kind of ending more. Has potential, serious contender for a vote.
XOXOX - meets the criteria, but I wanted an extra something to happen story-wise, a wicked twist besides the saw-it-coming-a-mile-away murder. And, there's a little too much explaining at the end.
SOMETHING WET HAPPENS - clever, and nicely executed, but that ending gets you a WTF? reaction from this reader, and the scenario reminded me of a couple of other things I've seen and read lately.
THE LAKE - nicely done, liked this, definitely a contender, tho' a little on the psycho side, I'm thinking some therapy might not go amiss.
TENTACLE HEADS - I couldn't get a handle on this, is it a David Lynch mindfvck, magic realism, Sci-Fi, epic fantasy, a blend of everything, or what? Lacks description and setting up front, which led to confusion. I liked the idea but wasn't thrilled by the execution.
SEVEN - too wordy for what it delivers, I guessed the background i.e. what the priest had been up to, and the demon punishment came without any kind of warning, which made things appear kinda hammy. The phallic stuff threatened to turn into an obsession.
SCRATCH OFF - I gagged at the overwordy character descriptions, Mark's sudden trial and jail sentence came as a total surprise (was something deleted to shrink the entry for the contest, I wonder?) and the ending wasn't much of an ending, alas.
THE BARTHOLEMEWS - after reading this I couldn't get the smell of crap out of my nostrils. I could see the funny side, but this goes 'way beyond funny, into gag, vile and ewww territory.
Shrug, your mileage may differ. See disclaimer above.

Enter the next one.
ylekot43's hosting it immediately following the midnight voting deadline.
I'm checking to see when the judges I had lined up are available.
It is for the best "first ten pages" -- the kind that makes the reader really really want to read the rest.
One winner -- the judges have agreed to read the winner's full script-- and if... and only if... any of them really really love it, it gets put into some good industry hands.

I came across something on You Tube that reminded me of Something Wet Happens.
WARNING! This is really WTF stuff and not for the squeamish. Actually it's gross but I had to watch.
ADDITIONAL WARNING!! Adult content.

Jesus!
That's gotta be one of the most sickest things I've ever seen.
Okay I don't get out much but hey, I'm gonna have nightmares about that..
The trouble with sex is you spend your first moments struggling to get out of one of those and then spend the rest of your life trying to get back in. That guy nearly succeeded albeit only his head.
I think the word "jaws" comes to mind..
I'll say it again - "Jesus!"
And maybe this word as well "Damn!"
Whatever next? The mind boggles...

I really liked Avon Calling but I didn't vote because I didn't read all the subsequent entries in time.
I wanted to enter but life got crazy during the 2-3 weeks & I didn't want to enter a half-baked idea (which was all I had).
Congrats to all. Love the contests. :)

i can either be really negative and say "second is the first loser" or look at it with a more positive slant that "the ladies like guys that come second." i'll go with the latter. :)
J i meant to put in a title, but i was in a hurry and forgot. i didn't notice it until you voted for UNTITLED and by then i figured it was too late. =)
thanks to Adam for sponsoring the comp and everyone who entered/voted, it was fun. :)
