Agents/Managers and Options

I've seen several posts where repped writers are optioning material. Do agents/managers usually push for optioning a client's material? Wouldn't an option for them mean very little commission (as opposed to a sale) and the script/property getting tied up for many months?

Although I'm still new to the business end of things, it was always my understanding that EVERYBODY wants a sale...however, options are more likely considering there's less risk to the buyer. So it's not that people are chasing options, it's just the best they can get.
