A PLATINUM PEN EVENT

Hello again, Scribes. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to my craftroom, and it gives me even greater pleasure to welcome you all to the very first MOTEL MACABRE: The Fear & Supernatural Pages! Now, if you missed our previous writing event, DEVIL'S DEADLINE: A Tribute to Sex & Murder, then you missed a hell of a party.

However, like a bad trip, we decided to come back for more. We also brought an even more sinister pair of thematic words: FEAR & THE SUPERNATURAL.

Halloween is creeping up on us, and as it draws nearer, writers young and old seem engrossed in the ever-growing Horror & Mystery buzz(ALL GENRES ARE OPEN FOR YOU THOUGH). My partner, Mister Q and I have been throwing ideas around for months to continue our mission for both: your creative freedom, and to present both thematic words as human experiences we're all familiar with.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-MOTEL MACABRE'S rules and regulations will consist of Short Scripts of no more than (6) pages in length.
-ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE SENT VIA PM TO MYSELF OR MISTER Q IN COURIER NEW FONT ONLY!
-The intial submission date is set for SEPTEMBER 1, 2007.
-The final deadline time is set for Midnight(EST) on HALLOWEEN NIGHT, October 31, 2007.
-(1) submission per writer until further notice. Once we reach (40) submissions, any further entries will only be allowed to enter per JUDGE'S approval.
-JUDGES WILL HAVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 15, 2007 TO CAST THEIR VOTES
-Winners announced on November 16, 2007(Prizes shipped within 5 days of results via FED EX 2nd Day)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Make us see your World, and forget about the awards for now. Entertaining your readers is a better high than any drug, and there aren't any readers on Done Deal who know about this amazing craft better than our ROW OF 13 JUDGES! Each one a teacher on the Forum. They are models for creative discipline, dedication, and inspiration. They're always giving selflessly back to the Done Deal community; in order that we know what is right and what is wrong. Let's salute them for a moment and appreciate their efforts.

We're all writers who love to put our audience in our minds through our characters and their World. Let's be great storytellers on this round. We don't write for money, or fame. We love it because of the look on the readers' faces after enjoying one of our narratives.

Strive for excellence. Strive for excellence. Strive for excellence....we have nothing to lose by making that our goal(even on something this small). These are not just words. This is a lifestyle commitment requiring sacrifice and discipline. Kicking your own ass keeps you sharp. Sacrifice is what? Everything outside of family-EVERYTHING(don't worry, you'll still find a way to have sex). It's expensive as hell, and never on sale. Strive for excellence...live that sh*t, and there will never be regrets.

With this much time until deadline, explore every level of both topics. It's a hell of an honor to write. I'm joining in too, so I'm subject to the same things as those who enter. Being a damn good writer is the only thing that's in our hands. Everything else isn't up to us, BUT we have control over what we write...so we have to make the most out of that opportunity every single time we scribble.

As usual, I want your absolute best work on this event. It's really a pleasure to be involved with all of you on this, so let's go out there and kick some ass! Best of luck to you all.
---------------------------------------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The featured DVDs in this event are both from 1960: PSYCHO & THE HAUNTING.
ALSO THIS IS THE FIRST PLATINUM PEN we have ever given to the winner.
---------------------------------------------------------------
1st PLACE=$100 + PLATINUM PEN(also $100 value)

2nd PLACE=$50

3rd PLACE=THE HAUNTING on DVD or ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S PSYCHO on DVD

Start boning up on what you're going to write. It wouldn't hurt.

Well done Adam for organizing this all. I hope it goes swimmingly like a stream of blood down the drain.

Adam Isaac
08-08-2007, 09:44 AM
I think it will.

I still haven't sent out Member PM Invites yet. I believe I could get 100 entries on my own, but the judges would have to go. Sounds messy, but now look at it like a Producer. Too many entries to cope with...that would make me believe the impossible, and I would feel very proud of this website, and it would inspire me a whole lot.

All I have to do is PM every member, and it would change the entire mindset of this site's negative thinkers. They would be happy to be writing, and everyone would get better.

Is this open to people who write with a partner? And can we submit more than one short?

Adam Isaac
08-08-2007, 11:38 AM
I want to say yes to both. Let's make it (1) submission for now, then we can change it later if needs be.

I'm going to speak to the Judges about collabs. Hang on.

Two of our judges collab, I'm checking with them.

I'm in for sure and this time I can't complain I didn't have enough time to write something decent. In fact I think I have an idea emerging right now as I type this.

Looking forward to it. :)

Do I have to declare the winnings if I win.

The last winner from Alaska, who failed to declare their prize as income to the IRS, was tracked down by the RCMP, having fled across the border, and became the subject of a film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082247/), (a "true story" with a few historical facts changed by Hollywood).

Sorry, one third of that platinum pen belongs to the IRS, and they will collect.

On a positive note, they're unlikely to send Lee Marvin after you.

I had a dream not too long about having lunch with Lee Marvin. We were at some country cooking cafeteria. Crazy.

08-22-2007, 07:47 AM
Ooh, wait, I know this one, I know this one. Marvin asked, "You eat guts?" and you replied, "I like guts." And then he took your organization apart.

Adam Isaac
08-22-2007, 09:43 AM
I only remember him saying, "This casserole is delicious, boy."

He kept on saying it too, and I kept on replying, "How can they be out of Texas Pete?"

Madness. Edward G. Robinson and Lee Marvin are the only ones that ever appeared in my dreams...always at some sort of restaurant too. Those dead guys sure like middle class dining.

Mister Q
08-23-2007, 10:52 AM
I've never heard of Edward G. Robinson. Just checked him out on IMDB. Was he a porn star or something? Just some of his titles: Sammy Goes South; Tight Spot; Climax; Mr Winkle Goes to War; Flesh and Fantasy; Manpower; Dr Ehrlich's Magic Bullet; Confessions of a Nazi Spy; and my personal favorite The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse!

Anyway, just got back from a seven day pub crawl otherwise known as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If anyone is thinking of visiting Scotland or Britain make sure you go. Edinburgh is a great city anyway but I'm convinced that in August it's the greatest city in the world!

Getting this thread back on track, it's great to see the competition up and running. Just want to doff my cap to Adam who has worked tirelessly concieving and executing all of this and I hope that's rewarded with a good turnout.

And to clarify, although it's called Motel Macabre it DOES NOT need to be based in a motel although, if you do, you will get a pat on the head or a spanked bottom depending upon which you prefere.

FYI to everyone -

Mister Q is my contest associate for those who didn't already know. His instructions on the rules and guidlines are official for the contest.

Mister Q,

Edward G. Robinson was one of the top three wiseguy/gangster/tough guy actors of the 30's & 40's. Eddie G, James Cagney, and Humphrey Bogart make up the top three.

You've got to step it up, partner! Edward G. was a film icon.

Adam -- I may enter this. Question -- you want the pages sent to your PM inbox here at DD? Can the inbox handle it in one entry?

Adam Isaac
09-15-2007, 07:04 PM
Split them. I believe the limit is 10,000 words.

A nice entry just came in, but it just fit into one PM.

It's totally up to you, darling.

Hmph, he never called me darling when I sent my entry.

I think the PM message limit is 5,000 characters (not words). Forum messages are limited to 10,000 characters.

I had to split my entry over 2 PMs even tho' it only came in around 6k characters. After I saved as Formatted ASCII (plain text) from MM2000, I opened the txt file in Notepad and copy/pasted around two-thirds into my first PM (I included 1 of 2 in the title line), then pasted the remainder into the second PM (2 of 2).

Just saying, in case it helps anyone.

Adam Isaac

You better enter, or you'll be banned from Writing Exercises for the rest of your life!!

Kidding, of course. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. You could even win the Platinum Pen.

I've got two completed entries ready as well, but I'm waiting until Fall officially hits(9/23-10/1)to decide on which will make the cut. If there's not anymore than (5) entries by next Monday....expect this to be a TWO ENTRY affair. There's several people waiting on the clearance for TWO ENTRIES...I feel their pain. I enjoyed writing both of them, which means they probably suck.

BTW folks, just because I'm entering and want to win...rest easy. I was raised with a little more class than that-no way I'd allow myself to win my own events. It is something I'd like to prove to myself, though.

It doesn't have to be horror. It can be a comedy.

I locked down a handful of additional judges yesterday, and to be honest, several of the judges aren't really horror writers, but they're still good writers, so in a manner of speaking, any entry has a shot to win.

Hey, guys, how about some more of you submitting a script for the contest? It is only six pages. You can knock that out in no time.

Tomorrow the madness begins. I'm PMing an invite to every DD member who posts regularly.

A lot people I've been PMing invites to so far are saying they're waiting for the TOUCH OF NOIR writing event we're doing in January 2008, but that is no excuse. If we don't out-draw the (20) submissions from this year's Devil's Deadline: Sex & Murder exercise there won't be any TOUCH OF NOIR contest, because I won't be sponsoring anymore writing events on this forum, and will effectively turn in my Writing Exercises Moderator badge, and just go back to being a sap like everybody else.

In other words, there has to be at least 21 + submissions to this contest, or I quit.

I have brought two, soon to be three people to enter this.

This is a large site with lots of members. Why the apathy? It doesn't take long to write a few pages...

Suggestion for future contests:
I don't know about the others, but to me it's more fun if the time allowed is shorter. In fact the shorter the better. I know my entries for the Canada Day sucked, but it was more fun, because we only had about eleven hours or so... Just a thought.

Still appreciate this though. I ;ove a short challenge... ;)

Adam Isaac
10-23-2007, 10:20 PM
Agreed. Two months was too long.

It'll be a month from here on in.

My legacy for these contests comes in January, with TOUCH OF NOIR: SHADES OF STYLE. Man, the theme pool for that one is phenomenal...SIXTEEN different themes, and character archetypes to chose from. The film noir people will love it!!

In regards to the lack of entries...this site is full of fearful writers without any cojones.

I think we'll top out at (25) entries for this one. That's still the biggest in Forum Writing Exercises to date, but (40)-(50) is where I want to get it. If the Film Noir doesn't get them excited, then the lame ducks will-hopefully-capitalize on the COMEDY OF KISSES contest in April

Sorry the delay, folks. Been sick as ****e since Halloween...

I'm sending the judges their reminders and I've already got (1) vote in(thanks ComicBent).

I just want to say that I'm very proud of the entries from you folks, and as soon as all judges vote, I'll let you guys know who won. I want to also thank my partner, Mister Q, who donated to the winnings pot. He's the man. Also to Derek for help to members and to me on some technical issues, and again to all the writers who submited. Everything is in the judge's hands now AND YOUR HANDS!!! 3rd place is the popular vote.....so let's have some votes!

(23) entries is the new record. Cool running and I are in the process of starting an irresistible "chain" series of stories in a few weeks. This will be tough, but the theme is meant for two writers to collaborate on a short script whenever they feel like it. Should be awesome.

Touch Of Noir is the next in JANUARY 2008, and I'll be winning that one.:D So, everyone join us for that.....who doesn't want to write film noir short scripts?

dpaterso
11-05-2007, 02:42 AM
Best wait and see what Adam says... maybe the "vote for 3 openings" idea might work better, or maybe waiting until the judge votes are in and we know 1st and 2nd place might work better still.

Pick the ONE entry you thought was best.

Select Adam Isaac's username in one of his posts above, then select "Send a private message to Adam Isaac" from the pop-down menu. Or, click here. (http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/boards/private.php?do=newpm&u=371)

Type "3rd place vote" or similar in the Title/subject field.

In the Message field, type the title of the script you thought was best.

End your PM with "Thank you Adam you are the best! I  you." or similar token of admiration, he loves that kind of stuff.

:)

dpaterso
11-05-2007, 03:15 AM
Good question, tho' I'd suggest the simple answer is that if the entry that gets most 3rd place reader votes turns out to already have been judged 1st or 2nd place winner, then the next highest-3rd-vote entry wins the 3rd place position. Repeat until you have a 3rd place entry that wasn't judged 1st or 2nd.

Or, if that logic doesn't work: Aaaaaadddaaaaaaaaammm!!!

-Derek

mcornetto
11-05-2007, 06:06 PM
That's what I'm curious about. It's quite likely that we could all easily vote for the first or second place winner. Or if all of us but one do then the third place would be selected based on one vote. Just doesn't seem right. Also when is the deadline for this voting? Thanks for your help. You're the best. you and all that.

IndieMe

Maybe we should vote for our favorite 1st, 2nd and 3rd place scripts. That way it'd be easy to pick the one that got the most votes and did not already receive 1st or 2nd place by the judges.

There are a few additional surprises involved for the winners as well. 4 out of the 13 JUDGES have chosen their favorites, so we're 9 votes away from the official results of the 1st Platinum Pen winner.

Tag Team Machines exercise is in the works.

Somebody will host the Christmas contest.

Then Touch Of Noir kicking off 2008.

The Loveseat Comedies coming up in April.

It's all about suspense. You know. Like when there's a bomb under the table and you know it's going off at one o'clock.

Then one o'clock comes and goes and the bomb hasn't gone off. You tend to relax a little.

Then..... KABOOOOOOOM!!!!

Waiting on (2) more original judges guys. The whole 'just before Thanksgiving' factor eliminated several of the original judges. Well, that and their scheduling conflicts.

I'm going out of town on Wednesday, and will be back on the 29th, so I promise we'll have it wrapped up by then(the 21st....not the 29th). Awards will probably happen when I get back; which reminds me...there's one of you I need to talk to about that additional prize for the winner...with all the PMs in and out, if you're that person...my PM box is clearing out now. If you forget or forfeit the offer, that's cool too.

BTW, if you entered the contest...YOU HAVE TO VOTE! Rules of the Game and all of that.

I know who will be 1st as of now. I'd like to post the name of the writers ASAP...so get out there and vote!

Actually, I'll probably do moneygrams while I'm out of town. The Platinum Pen will need engraved for the winner...handle that when I get back.

I apologize for the delay, folks. It's tough to select your panel two months in advance, and not have at least one conflict. That's actually my mistake. I jumped the gun too early. Any panel contests from here on in will be selected a week before deadline. Plus, the judges doing this for me are doing it for free (and obviously for you all too). I greatly appreciate all their and your patience on this one.

Winners & Written By's on Wednesday.

When did it become a rule that we have to vote if we entered? I must have missed that, and if I was aware from the start I would have been reading them, but reading 23 shorts in two days now doesn't sound very appealing. (No offense to the entrants).

I thought, since this is being run like a REAL contest, and we have 14 judges, that just writing one and waiting for word on how you did would be the name of the game as it is with any other real contest with judges, etc.

Yes, I can see Biglips how reading 23 shorts all at once
about butchery, torture, and perversity of every kind might
dampen your Thanksgiving spirit what with it being only
a few days away.

or maybe not.

Just read them.

It's not the subject matter, I can talk about tapeworms and Marquis de Sade disembowling a pregnant woman while I eat my cranberry sauce and stuffing.

I just wasn't made aware of this rule until now (three days after the results were to be posted in the first place). If I missed it, and it was a RULE before now, my bad.

If I didn't... my point stands.

PS - not to sound like my usual malcontent gadfly self, I DO appreciate the hard work Adam, Derek, and the judges put into all of this. Not to mention the writers, I'm just saying... well... I think I already said it.

I think our votes are only for third place.

Unless I missed something too. :D

lips, read the opening line of each entry plus the first line of dialogue, and vote based on those alone. That's what they do in Hollywood.

Vote for titles.

You don't have to vote now. I have enough.

FYI-To judges and/or anyone else other than cool running, for the next 4 hours or so, my PM will be disabled. We're collaborating on a writing exercise which everyone else can take part in very soon. (Green letters with me mean a storm of RIDDLES is in the forecast as well)

It isn't a contest, but it will require a lot more writing than contests past. This is the first ever attempted Writing Exercise on Done Deal(to my knowledge, cool running, Shane and I were the only madmen that nearly attempted it)to advocate Collaboration and a heavy emphasis on Continuity....yes, that's right we're breaking out the serial episode scripts, featuring a variety of options....in fact, all genres and styles are welcome. The initial story arc is the first of a continuous series of serials dealing with the always controversial topic of GOOD VS. EVIL VS. NEITHER...a chance to take One-on-One debates on the subject to the f*cking show-me table! We welcome anyone and everyone to make use of this new Writing Exercise, appropriately called the:

Seventh Art Serials
(Which of course refers to the Art of Motion Pictures)

Hi Adam,

Could you please post when you're available to receive PM's again? I would like to cast a vote. I do apologize to everyone for my late timing; I've somewhat buried myself in research for a script and forgot to come up for air.

Sincerely,

That's hardly comparable to my frustration at not having been offered any bribes, (once again), and, thus being forced to read all of the submissions, to judge them according to their merits, and to vote without realizing any pecuniary advantage!

No, I didn't get your PM.

And, did you really think that I'd give up one of my votes for two foreign vehicles, (when there's a Canadian-built hybrid vehicle (http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/grahambell/images/Sd-309.jpg) much more suitable to my commuting needs)?
