This is my first year going, not sure exactly what to expect. What have some of the past highlights been for you? Some things you didn't expect, what I should do to prepare for it? Thanks. Sorry for all the questions.

Is it at the hotel near the airport again? That place SUCKS. I've taken pitches at the last two but I think I may have to skip this one the location is so sh!tty. OTOH, definitely going to San Diego. Anyone here pitching there?

What's wrong with the hotel by the airport? What makes it so terrible? Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Last year I was disappointed when I found out that the Expo had been moved the hotels because I lived just a couple of blocks away from the Convention Center.
But it wasn't bad at all. Nicer surroundings by far.

Wen - we must do lunch :)
I'll be there to introduce somebody on the podium and otherwise might hand around for a bit. The Expo is fun. I agree - I liked the convention center better but ya know, change is good.

I just find it ugly and depressing and out in the middle of nowhere. Of course, lunch was pretty good and last time I ran into my favorite development exec goddess--one of the most naturally beautiful girls working in the business. Maybe she'll be there again...for lunch. Hmm. If there are donuts I'll have to reconsider.

This will be my first trip to the Expo, my first trip to L.A. actually. I'm looking forward to it and would enjoy any opportunity to hook up and discuss writing, etc.
Donuts sound good but not too many, I don't want to roll into any of the seminars. :rolling:

I completely owe you a lunch (or two) for losing all sense of etiquette with that read last year. :o I'm coming to LA a day early and leaving the day after the expo so I should have plenty of time - and dammit, I'll make time!
Let's plan on it!

Have you guys had success with networking and meeting executives, agents, etc. at the Expo? Have you entered the screenwriting contest?
GreatOz

Every screenwriter needs to visit L.A. -- it's our Mecca, baby.
Sign up for some pitches. Every screenwriter needs to experience that as well, it's a rite of passage, a skill that needs to be learned, and you get instant feedback on your idea from someone that actually works in the industry.
You'll have a great time. You can meet all kinds of people if you're not too shy.

I know this may be a stupid question but since I've never been I'll go ahead and ask anyways. What is the dress code usually? Business casual?
Also, I'll be flying in early on Wednesday...try to see some sights before the party that evening. Did everyone purchase the Gold pass or do you pick and choose?
GreatOz

You'll see all types. I saw one guy wearing a gaucho outfit with a big hat!
Casual is the way to go. Jeans. A nice shirt. No suits. People in the movie business hate suits -- they're only worn by accountants!
try to see some sights before the party that evening
You're not going to be able to see many sights unless you rent a car. You don't want to be walking around that neighborhood too much! And since this is right by the airport, with a free shuttle, that would be an unnecessary expense.

I'll be there, and because - once again - they have me doing a class on Saturday at the crack of dawn, I've decided to book a room instead of fight 405 traffic. It's actually the 405/101 interchange that I hate. But the freakin' 405 can be stop and go on Sunday afternoon - and that's just crazy. And staying on site means drinking more.
The good thing about the hotels is the food, the bad thing is the event ends up spread out and some of the rooms are small. Last year I had well over the legal limit in my room before the class began, so I took the class out to the pool. It was fun.
Maybe we should figure out a DD meet up?

Bill tell me what your class is going to be about? Please? I know that Kevan Craft from England has spoken highly about you, and your wonderful blue books!
I got in the mail a booklet about the EXPO and all the classes, still reading them over to decide which seminar I should attend... so darn many of them, no doubt!
I like to know what you will be focusing on, might be interested in attending. Not sure about the Hotel thing for me though, I live in La Mirada, it's just a swift direct route on the 105 freeway to the airport... although I will be driving alone, wife works at a school, she can't go!
As for the new location, I missed it last year, had a real bad year last year! But, I intend to get the full attendance this year without a doubt.
Anyone interested in teaming up and making friends? I'm interested in doing it. Have to brush this negative engery people have on "DD", too many hatred thoughts and mean attitudes.

I've taken many classes in screenwriting. Too many. Most of what I heard went in one ear and out the other.
But something I heard in Bill's class totally changed my writing forever -- and for the better. (I'm not going to reveal what he said! You'll have to go and find out for yourself!)
Good, basic, solid stuff.

Oh man! I just a fantastic post and my server timed out!
I have gained incredible friends, knowledge, and business contacts from the Expo.
Let’s meet in the far back right hand corner outside in the pool area on Wed night? Bring business cards so we can mingle and start off the trip on the right foot!
Wed night?
If not, please respond with “Thurs” and we’ll move it to accommodate the most people.
New guy from NC, sorry, I wrote a nice long introduction to the Expo with Do’s and Do not’s, but it got wiped.
Be professional, polite, and smile. Jeans and polo’s. Don’t expect to sell a script at the Expo. Don’t take too many classes; focus on your weak areas and plan out your series of seminars. Try to hear a few free speakers (you must hear William Goldman once) and take advantage of any free panels. Sign up for 1-3 pitches to pop your cherry perhaps make a good contact.
See you there!
Missed it last year, but headed there this year and would love to meet up with ya all.
Going to focuse more on guest speakers this time while squeezing in a few key classes like Blake Snyder & Bill M's.
And to answer Briking's question: I actually hooked up with my manager from a pitch at the expo.

I mean, I live in LA and chances of me checking into a hotel is somewhat senseless... I know that I will have to fight the 105 freeway from where I live to get there, but at least it will be somewhat direct than coming someplace like Riverside, Orange County or Pomona!!!
Let me know what you guys will plan as an alternative, will you please?

i think all of the classes are in the Marriott. the networking parties were all by the pool last time. so, even if you live in L.A., are you going to hang around afterwards to socialize or take late classes? Even if you have committments at home / work, try to leave some space in the evening 7-10PM & carve out a few minutes.
let's do a Wed evening and then maybe a Thurs or Friday afternoon just to assemble and meet up? i prefer nights, but why not?!
role call?
please check back on this thread or keep it alive close to game time so we can adjust if we need to.

Since I get a bit claustrophobic stuck inside hotels, anyone with local recommendations on the following would be appreciated:
1) a great sushi place
2) a cool down n dirty “bar”, not a club or lounge.
3) Cool suggestion for beach area to stroll and take in ocean view, not necessarily to swim or surf. Take the Metro to Long Beach? Rent a car to Santa Monica?
Thanks!

Has anyone received their entrance passes yet? I purchased a Gold Pass and I was told that I could expect to receive it around this time.
Also, does anyone know if you can purchase seminar tickets at the Expo? My brother is only purchasing the regular registration.
Thanks.
Joaneasley

You can buy seminar tickets at the Expo, and you'd be able to pick up any seminar packets you paid for that you didn't receive in time.
There are several beaches with very different personalities nearby. Google Dockweiler State Beach, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier and Manhattan Beach to see which suits you and what kind of transportation will get you there. Long Beach is further, so I'd only make a point to go there if it's the most convenient to public transportation. But I have no idea if the train stops where you'd need it to, or if there's convenient transportation to any of the closer beaches.
Let me know if people want to go to a nearby restaurant for lunch one of the days. Those of us with cars can drive out and get back in on the same parking pass (at least we could last year.)

Hi La Femme Joyeuse (Julie) -
We spoke on the phone eariler this year about a family type of film, would love to meet no doubt. I will have my computer with me in case I miss anyone to chat with, etc. So, to talk about a secret handshake, how about a peace sign or something?!?! I'll let you give us the sign, how does that sound? Or, maybe a register sheet with the column that reads: how did you hear about us? We can then insert or write, "DD" or something like it...?

Being that I'm diabetic, have to keep things on the low carb side of things, and even though I'm hispanic the mexican food is good, but what is very interesting is the Indian buffet.
Let's see... what sounds good??!!!!????
Paco's Tacos (Mexican, similar to El Torito or Acapulco)
Shershah (Indian buffet)
Perhaps there should be a code as to where to meet? Does anyone remember last year's expo? Is there an easy landmark in the hotel or spot where anyone can find? Maybe a its own bar or something, a place like that where we can say... met at the hotel's bar/restuarant/etc. at a specific time?

David, does that mean you don't have the stomach for it? Or are you game?
If we need to keep working on a choice:
A less spicy, low-carb-friendly option is Souplantation (soup and salad bar, although they offer plenty of carb choices, too.)
Depending on what you order, Thai food could also work for those who don't want carbs and those who don't want a lot of spice.
Also, Paco's Tacos menu is on line. I see they serve steak and seafood as well as tacos, burritos etc. so even that might work.
But if everybody's OK with Shersha, that's fine, too.

I don't have a brilliant idea about where to meet up. We still have time for someone to come up with an inspired suggestion. If that doesn't happen, we'll figure out something.
It's OK with me to meet for lunch more than once. I'll be going to the various places we talked about anyhow. Just so we match the people with cars with the ones who need rides. I can only fit so many in my Mini Cooper. (23 circus clowns?)

Great idea, Michael Zoe. If Femme is willing to keep it there so we can ask for it, we could have a sign up sheet noting where we're going each day and what time we need to meet up. If possible, we should sign up earlier in the day, note whether we need a ride or how many passengers we could take, and give our contact numbers. That way, we'd know who we should be looking for before we drive off.

No, we got it solved. There's a room in the Expo where vendors have booths. You'll see it. We can use Femme's booth as a meeting place, and she will hold the sign-up sheet for us. On the sign-up sheet, which she will keep under something untill one of us asks for it, we can place our contact numbers, and/or you can PM me in advance.
I will print out driving directions to the restaurants and make a schedule of where we're going to eat each day. The restaurants we talked about are in this thread. I know people said they liked the idea of the Indian buffet and Thai. What others? I don't know who wants to go out to lunch together on which days.
If people tell me here or PM me in advance which day or days you prefer to go, and which restaurants you prefer. I'll try to plan the schedule accordingly.

Great! Then Femme has my contact number already anyway, she add it if she likes... or I will do again later... (either way is fine with me on that)
So, Joaneasley is there going to be a schedule of when and where? (For the places to eat?)
Joaneasley
09-21-2007, 11:10 PM
Yes, I will make a schedule of where we eat what day. But I want you guys to tell me which days of the conference you tentatively plan to go to lunch, and which of the restaurants you'd be willing or unwilling to go to, in order of preference. You can PM me.
If I know who wants to go to lunch on Thursday and Saturday, or on Friday only, or every day of the Expo, and if I know that everyone who tentatively wants to go Thurs. likes Thai food or Italian but can't eat Mexican food, then I'll know which restaurant to choose for which day.
You can google info about most of these restaurants online:
Restaurant possibilities include Siam Thai, Shershah Indian buffet, Souplantation, Jerry's Deli, Paco's Tacos Mexican, Allejo's Italian...
Oh, and today I walked into another restaurant in the vicinity that I'd never noticed before. I wasn't there to eat, but it looks promising IMHO -- Derrick's Jamaican Restaurant on La Tiejera.
(I was there because a West Indian guy who works there called to say he found my wallet, which I didn't realize had fallen out of my purse when I was getting into my car near there So happens he found my phone number on my Expo ticket receipt printout.)
Nice man. He gave me his card. He does his own West Indian event catering, if anybody is looking for that.
So far, a few people said they liked the idea of Shershah and Siam, but I don't know which days they want to do lunch. Which restaurants and which days sound good for you?

Ok Joaneasley-
I will let you know after I review the choices, I do intend to go all the days of the event. My wife understands it's one weekend of the month that this happens one year... LOL.
Salad is always a good choice, I suggest we do that one either Thursday or Friday. Siam Thai, is another good choice, and then Shershah Indian buffet, which is always interesting to me could be either Saturday or Sunday. (Wow, I surely love food!)
And finally, Allejo's Italian would be a good choice for the last day. To be honest, it doesn't really matter to me, but all are fanatastic choices. It's gets hard to decide. But, tell me more about the new choice you discovered: Derrick's Jamaican Restaurant on La Tiejera?
That one really sounds nice compared to them all, except for the Indian food of course. I don't recall ever eating Jamaican food. I one for exploring exotic food types, did in Inglewood... my wife and I drove out there once for her Teacher's Credit Union application (in August) when she wanted to get her papers in order before she bought her Honda CV-5, we saw this interesting Soul-Food resturant and took the opportunity to eat there! Fantastic food, took forever to get our food, but it was fantastic!
Great Joaneasley, I will PM you my thoughts when I look it over. Thanks!

I'm up for meeting out for lunches and whatever, but I find when I'm traveling and messing with my body schedule that I should eat bland foods, so I am more than happy to show up but forgive me for ordering bread and water :D

wenonahI see no problems with that... if you are traveling from the east coast or from the north, the food in Southern California is a bit spicy in some respects. So, come along and enjoy the company at least, I would suggest!:D

Wenonah, we'll chill out at the Souplantation one day. But even at the Indian buffet where most of the foods are spicy, there are also non-spicy buffet items like baked tikka chicken, steamed rice, salad, naan bread, and rice pudding. You'll do OK.

We'll defintely have to go some places with non-spicy food. I enjoy spicy but I'm not sure it would be a good idea to mix it with the Expo seminars. My stomach could cause a disruption.:)
What's everyone's plan for the Expo? Are you planning on doing a lot of pitching? Seminars? Where are you staying? Is this your first time going?

Some spice is not good... but a little taste is always enjoyable to experienced. This is my first time coming to this location... the year before last it was at the down-town convention center. So, being that I personally live here in Southern California... will not need a hotel. LOL!
But, I intend to see William Martell, and a few others which I haven't decided upon yet. But, I am looking forward to this year's event.
Does anyone know, after one has bought their tickets for the EXPO online if they are to get their tickets in the mail, or is it the electronic reciept the ticket?
A valid question I should have asked eariler?

Did anyone else enter the screenwriting contest? The list of quarterfinalists may be released this week. This is the first contest I've entered so I'm not sure what to expect.

I entered! I made the finals in the short comp. last year and since I quarterfinaled in Nicholl this year I slipped my feature script in last minute (well, the first last minute deadline) I figured as long as I'm going I may as well jump in with both feet. Good luck :)

Good luck to you as well.
I just began writing screenplays this year so I don't have that many under my belt. I figured since I was going to the Expo, why not enter and see what happens.

Just curious how many of you that are going to the Expo are L.A. based. When I went a few years ago, I found that it was about 70% out of towners and 30% west coasters. And to be honest, most of my screenwriting friends in L.A. avoid it.
I will say that some of the seminars offered are beneficial as long as you pick the right people. I didn't find the mixers or networking events helpful, unless they've change the formats this year.
Anyway, if you're L.A. based, let me know your thoughts about going or not.

I'm in LA, and I go every year. I always run into other local writers I know, or that I've lost touch with, so it's a chance to catch up with people.
I no longer go to a lot of screenwriting classes. Mostly I go to hear the guest speakers like William Goldman, who I always enjoy, and some I haven't heard before, and to the panels with industry people I may want to meet. And I always meet some people I've known online but haven't yet met in person.
Since I know the restaurants in the area, I'm taking input from anyone who wants to join us for lunch any or all of the days, so there will be a place DD people will meet for lunch each day. I've got to do it soon, so anyone who is interested, please register your preferences. Some have asked about sushi, but I don't know any of the sushi bars nearby. We're considering Siam Thai, Shershah Indian buffet, Derrick's Jamaican, Souplantation, Jerry's Deli, and Allejo's Italian. That's more restaurants than there are days, so I'm trying to balance people's varied preferences and to accommodate people's dietary issues.

I do apologize.
And Joan, yes in you were interested I do live in LA. We're going to meet for the lunch, so count me in!

i'v said it before...
for the price...
if you want to listen to working screenwriters or produced writers, then you can get positive things from the Expo for a very nice price.
if you are being paid, optioned, or making a living writing, then only you or your agent/manager know if you can benefit from the multitude of classes.
if you're in film school there in L.A. or a master's program, you can prob skip it unless you want to reinforce.
if you are on IMDB with several produced, well-known credits, then you probably can skip the classes.
otherwise, if you want to try to learn, every class is a crapshoot in the end, then the Expo is a reasonably priced event with working writers teaching courses...LOTS of courses.
and just like a film program, there are going to be professor's / teachers to stay away from.
as for the free speakers, well worth the price to hear Scott Frank, or Ted & Terry, Goldman (just once needed), or Orci.
so, GO, and just don't tell anyone!!! make friends, have fun, learn, and just be positive!

It looks like a few of the Guests of Honor have canceled. They list Stuart Beattie, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as all having canceled. What a major disappointment.
Is this normal to happen so close to the Expo or do you think it could be WGA strike related?

Quick question: Are the rooms cold? Usually when I go to conferences I am freezing because the air is pumped up.
Just curious what previous attendees thought about room temperatures.
Thanks in advance.

That's hysterical! Expo I at the Convention Center was plagued by that very issue. People were lining up for so long that they missed half their opening-day seminars. CS promised that would be the first item to be fixed for Expo II.
To find out they're back to square one is mindbendingly funny and annoying. But thanks for the info. I'll stop accosting my mailman.

Don't worry about the fires. The winds have died down.
The sign-up sheets and directions to the restaurants are already in my car, and I will deliver them to The Script Whisperer's booth Thurs. AM when I get there.
Everybody at the Expo who wants to come to lunch, please sign the sheets even if you already told me you are coming because that's where we'll get each others' phone numbers and be able to keep track of how many drivers we have for how many passengers.
I look forward to seeing everybody there.

Thanks, La Femme. Incredibly, I just got an email this morning (Wednesday) before I was about to shower and head off that Seth Rogen has been added as a guest speaker. Not only that, but the times for Scott Frank and Steve Zaillian have changed to Sunday! Madness and mayhem, right up until the last second.
This will be whacky. I just hope it's a lot of fun. And not in the barrels-o variety.
Seeya there, folks!

Hey lordmanji-
I live in La Mirada, it takes me about 45 minutes or so to get out there. If you want, we can car-pool!? It will help on the parking, and the gas...
If you live somewhere in between me, maybe we can figure something out. I didn't go today, have to run errands and such, but intend to go tomorrow: Saturday and Sunday. So, if you like to switch off... call me and we can talk about it. I will PM you my cellular number if you like?
But only after you contact me and would want to make the arangements?:D
