Cool... anyone have any recommendations? What one is the best bang for the buck? If you had to choose three, what three?

I'd strongly recommend Michael Hauge's Writing Romantic Comedies And Love Stories DVD. That's if you're either into Rom/Com's or just want to have solid advice on writing for that romantic interest.

Joss Whedon one was disappointing for me. Stay away IMO (and I'm a big fan of Joss).

I directed this and 40 of the other DVDs and this is my favorite. If you don't have the book, Gulino's on sequences is great. I think Killer Endings is one of the best ones too (yes, I am biased). Kitchen's are a little bit left-brained, but like Iglesias, try one and if you like one, you will like them all. Michael Ray Brown's super-detailed checklist is thorough.

And although I think Hauge's is amazing, the one I actually refer to clients more often than any is Flaxman's Seducing the Studio Reader. I promise that 99% of amateur writers would make their script a 50%-800% better read after watching this DVD. Flaxman is one of my competitors and we once got in a fist fight at the Expo Closing Ceremonies 'cause he called me left-brained, yet I still reccommend his dvd.

Peace,
Jim

Thanks, I just ordered 3 recommended titles but question. The email deal mentions "It costs just $6.79 to ship up to three DVDs via trackable UPS ground. And the more you order, the lower the cost per DVD for shipping." And on the page it says "shipping 2-3 DVDs now costs the same as one."... but the invoice I am getting in my cart is $12.60 for shipping? That isn't much of a reduced savings there

I am not an employee of the company. I was just giving you my opinion. You should email them or look into it like you would with any online service. Maybe they haven't updated the info yet.

Jim,

Can you go into more detail why Seducing the Studio Reader is so good?

http://rougewave.blogspot.com/2007/11/good-bad-and-final-polish.html

Check out the blog for my reasoning. The blog is silly. But the point is dead-serious. And please no flames about me promoting my or Julie's work.

When structure and everything is done, the last polish where you focus on every single word begins as just an exercise in proofreading but if you have talent or if you spend time to learn the craft of doing it, this meticulous process can grow into one of the finer skills in screenwriting: the ability to make every word/image/beat work for you.

It starts at as a game like finding the right word: "He looks down, gasps. He is pregnant. He walks to the mirror." As a filmmaker, I already know that him walking to the mirror could be a boring spot, something I want to shorten with editing or possibly even cut from the script or shooting schedule. So if you are scouring your script, you realize, as is, the line isn't (or is less) essential. But change "walks" to "waddles" and all of sudden it is essential.

Alot of Flaxman's nitpicky attention to detail is on more mechanical stuff but if you embrace his ethos of every word counting, then you are opening one of the inevitable doors through which you must pass on your way to becoming a great screenwriter. If you can't get there on talent alone, then Flaxman's detail and repetiveness helps you learn the craft.

Thanks Jim for the review. The finer skill in screenwriting: the ability to make every word/image/beat work for you - indeed.

Have you had a chance to review these three yet Todd. And if so, what did you think of them?

I am still waiting... and waiting... and... It will be a month tomorrow. I talked to them on the phone Dec 26 and they were SUPPOSED to be sent out Fedex the next day, but....

That sucks. For whatever reason, I believe CS seems to be falling apart when it comes to its ordering system of late (DVD's and CS Mag subs).

here is the latest... I just called and asked AGAIN where are the 3 dvds I purchased and paid for Dec 4 and called about Dec 26 and was told at that time they were being sent out the next day (Dec 27) by Fedex...

the excuse this time is that their third party fulfillment company has been let go and that CS is now filling orders themselves and have started sending out orders last Friday, they are sorry and a $12.97 discount coupon will be included in my order (whenever it shows up)

sheesh and sigh

Yeah, Moviequill, I want a review too! :)

I'm thinking of buying 1 or 2, would like to know if it's worth the trouble to check them out.

I like the Dialogue series. Are they on par with those?

Thanks!
