Is it worth going to a studio to pitch a film they've already produced years ago for a remake? I think they would just take my motion to remake the film say forget you and remake it themselves.

I have an idea on how to change the film to make it darker and more compelling. I figured since they already own the rights why not.

I'm so excited about this film it has consumed me! I would appreciate any advice. Thank You!

This isn't going to work for a new screenwriter. Maybe if you had a track record and good contacts this would be feasible, but why would a studio think you're the person for the job? Keep it on the back burner and focus on creating your own material.

Cynicide is quite right. Hard to be sure without seeing what creds you have. As long as you have a VERY good story and have it written in proper format, submit it through your agent and see what happens. At the very least, you might be able to sell it to them. One of my students wrote a superb sequel to GALAXY QUEST, and although she has yet to sell it, it is making the rounds. She's currently revamping it to be far more generic, so that's an alternative path for you. Good luck!
