SICK: A Horror Contest - Guidelines

Here's how this works:

- Supernatural horror, psychological horror, torture porn, whatever. You've got free reign.

- 5 pages max.

- If you enter, you have to vote. Otherwise, your entry will be disqualified. If you don't enter, however, you can still vote.

- You can have a max of TWO entries.

- Submissions start now and run through Mar. 21st and 11:59PM PST. That's two weeks, so you have time to polish and really show us what you can do.

- Voting lasts from Mar. 22nd at 12AM PST and runs through the end of the month. Winners announced on April 1st!

- Submissions and voting are done through PM to me.

- No voting for yourself.

- The winner gets a prize!

Scoring:

- To vote, give your 1st, 2nd and 3rd place choices.

- All votes are NOT created equal. Each entry will be awarded 3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 points for a 2nd place vote and 1 point for a 3rd place vote.

I already have one written. I wrote it for the K.I.S.S comp, but two people told me it was too gross for DD, so I had to write another one. :D

With 2 days still to go to deadline?! I was wrestling with a couple of potentials, maybe other folks were too. Thing is, the "sick" theme requires a bit of thought, you can't just brain-fart your way through something like this. Well I couldn't anyway.

Oh well, maybe next time. The peril of parallel contests -- the other one got more visibility because its posts kept moving to the top of the forum.

Same deadline right? I'm one of those who likes to wait till the last hour because I never know when my remaining five or six creative brain cells are going to fire off. Sadly, drugs haven't helped this situation. Not from lack of trying though. Not that you care. Just saying. The rambling continues though. Not that you care about that either. :cool:

I don't mind so much about the prize (unless it's a membership to some club, then I'm all in). It's the prestige I'm looking for. I tell all my friends I took third once. Their eyes get big and then I tell them it's a world wide contest and then the jaws drop.

I set aside some time to read all of the entries, (thusfar), as I may not have much time to read the many anticipated last-minute entries. I sat down with eagerness to see what bizarre and macabre visions the likes of IndieMe and others might offend me with. Then...phffft!

Earth Hour struck, and my computer monitor blacked out.

To protest this interference by the World Wildlife Fund (http://www.worldwildlife.org/earthhour/) and other organizations, (which seek publicity to their "climate change" fear-mongering), I wandered out onto the ice floes, tracked down a baby seal, bashed it on the head a few times with a club, and skinned it, by the light of the moon. Its mother should be able to find it in that puddle of blood, thrashing about with plaintive cries (http://www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org/media/babyseal1.mp3), as I left it alive and only took the pelt.

These entries were simply splendid. :) Here are some comments I scribbled while reading if anyone's interested, the usual my humble opinion thing applies. Click and drag to see the white ink text.

Mixed Tapes - creepy but not quite sick enough despite Willy's dirty lifestyle. 3rd place vote.

Unprotected Sex - I laughed out loud at this one, and was still chuckling a minute later. It's sick all right! 1st.

The Winner - cute idea but I might have appreciated it more if two bitchy writers were sticking pins in the doll, instead of two busboys having a laugh.

The Tenth - shifting from black comedy to divine retribution was clever. 2nd place vote.

My comments:

Mixed Tapes - I thought this was pretty overwritten. This was probably a 2-page short that was ballooned out into 5 pages. Why are we being told how this guy makes coffee and how he picks up his jacket?

I thought you could've gotten the message across much quicker. Then, I thought you short-changed us on the scene that *was* a little interesting - him giving the girl the tape.

I also have a pet peeve about stories where the protag spends the first few pages waking up in the morning.

Unprotected Sex - Ludicrous, but that's what you were going for,...sick. 2nd place.

The Winner - I like dpat's comment above, about changing the busboys to competing writers, but otherwise I thought this was cute. The rats at the end was a cool moment. 1st place.

The Tenth - I'm really not sure what was going on here. So they have a guy and they can make him do things...then they're going to take his brain out...why? What are they doing? Still....3rd place.
