Let's see if this one can't go a little smoother.
Here's how this works:
- Sword-and-sorcery, space travel, time travel, alt. history, whatever...free reign.
- 5 pages max.
- If you enter, you have to vote. Otherwise, your entry will be disqualified. If you don't enter, however, you can still vote.
- You can have a max of TWO entries.
- Submissions start now and run through May 31st at 11:59PM PST.
- Voting lasts from June 1st at 12AM PST and runs through June 10th. Winners announced on June 11th!
- Submissions and voting are done through PM to me.
- No voting for yourself.
- Winner gets a prize!
Scoring:
- To vote, give your 1st, 2nd and 3rd place choices.
- All votes are NOT created equal. Each entry will be awarded 3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 points for a 2nd place vote and 1 point for a 3rd place vote.

five pages is a little thin, especially for sci-fi or fantasy which usually require a bit more room to set up the world.
that being said, i will be entering.

It's unfortunate, but 5 pages has always been kind of a de facto standard on the board - largely to keep post sizes manageable.
Think of it as, well...a writing exercise, as the forum is thus named. I look forward to reading your entry, Arroway.

I like 5 pages. For these contests I usually end up with a first draft around 10-15 pages. Cutting it down is something I've had to learn how to do. Incorporating this same condensation in my other writing, where page count doesn't matter, has churned out some tight writing.

Five pages is plenty to tell a story. I normally read about 30+ 5 pagers at www.moviepoet.com every month. Some sci-fi scripts have won too...
One page scripts can be tough though. :)

Just asking, have you removed all left margin spaces? I think the software counts these characters before removing them.

i tried to post it the same way i post a page in script pages- saving the file as as a "text with layout" then copying that with code wrapped around it in the post.

Just asking, are you alllowing the deadline to slip, since the March Madness contest ran late again due to pesky real life stuff?

Can you extend it some or will that cause problems? Is there another contest in May? I think I'm confused.

I told Adam about it and the one page contest idea like last December.

Yep. I have the PM in my downloaded message folder.
Oz, I told you that that idea was the sh*t. You should've plugged it as soon as your 1 page exercise wrapped.
Oz was the first to pitch that exercise...pity Done Deal Pro wasn't the launching pad for it.
You'll just have to tap into your brain and engineer another diamond, Oz.

One question... Since there's already been three or so submitted, would you guys want them posted as they come in or all at once on June 1?
Either way is fine with me. :)
Seems to me some people get inspired if there are a few available to read.
mayhap as they come in? we all have to have our votes in by june 1st, right? it'd give us some time to read, review, and stew.
game on...!
tonyz
05-21-2008, 02:56 PM
The voting period is June 1 to June 10, so we get that time to read and review.
My vote would go to "all at once." Confidence is difficult enough to come by, and if I read a piece that I think totally blows mine out of the water, I'm going to reek cowardice and never send my submission. If I think I have even the slightest chance to stand up with the folks here, my submission actually gets sent, and that's a big, big step for me. Yes, it's stupid and doesn't make sense but that pretty much sums me up.

I know it's sacrilege to treat screenwriting as anything but deadly serious, but no one's life is at stake, this is just a friendly contest, y'all are allowed to enjoy yourselves. :)
yeehi, if you write twenty 5-page shorts this year and string them together to form a feature-length screenplay, people will think you're a creative genius!

Hey all,
Just got back from vacation. LOVE the mountains!! :)
Got some entries in my inbox and a couple in my gmail. Either account is fine to send your entry. I will post all of them on June 1st.
If you sent an entry to Naudikum, please resend it to me.
For those of you who have not sent in an entry yet... get cracking! There's still enough time.
Best way to become a better writer is to post your script for others to read and receive feedback.

IndieMe

can we just do public voting?
I feel anonymous voting is better for honesty.
Comments are always appreciated, but perhaps better left until the voting is done to discourage voting without having read the entries.
I don't know anyone here so my comments are always based on the scripts alone, but many of you seem to know each other...
i concur with the private voting. being new to the boards there's a certain amount of intimidation to all this.

Heh, it's just a fun little contest d3x, no need to feel intimidated. I'm gonna PM my 1st, 2nd and 3rd place votes to IndieMe, and when the results are announced I'll post whatever comments I scribble as I read the scripts, in case participants are interested in feedback.
