Thanks, guys. As you all know, it's nerve wracking going out with a spec, and I'm greatly relieved today.
No, this one isn't for me to direct. It's a big budget action-adventure - when I direct again, it'll be a comedy.

Jeff, you didn't get the life rights to my story, so what makes you think that you can write about me or my father James, who in actuality was a stingy son of a gun who never acknowledged me as his own after his roll in the hay with my mother, the late ***** Galore.
But I can be persuaded for the right amount of zeros. Please have your agent call my agent.

Hey Jeff,
I'd imagine it won't make too long a story, but if you have time I'd love to hear how it all played out.

Yeah, it's not that long or exciting a story - we started going out Monday to producers that I've worked with recently and wanted to give a first look to. It hit a tracking board Tuesday, I think, so on top of all the producers we went to, a slew of others were calling in to read it. Wednesday morning, we basically had every buyer in town covered. Here's the list of studios (I took out the producer's names that were taking it in to each place):
Disney
Dreamworks
Montecito
Fox
Fox atomic
New regency
New Line
Paramount
Mgm
Sony
Universal
Weinstein
Dimension
CBS films
Summit
Overture
Lionsgate
Walden
Since there was interest from a lot of producers, there was very little duplication of producers - basically it was a different one for each studio. As I said to you the other day, by Wednesday morning one of my main goals had been met - even if it didn't sell, I was getting read by a lot of new people, and that's always led to work for me.
There are a couple of notable names not on that list - Warner Brothers, who we were told by the producers that had deals there that this movie just wasn't for. Gold Circle, who I love and just made a movie with, but they're not usually in the business of buying specs - they like talent attached first. Probably others.
But even so, that's 18 buyers with a couple left off. You can see why I disagree when people say there are only a handful of buyers out there. ;)
So Wednesday, I just started sweating it and waiting for the script to work its way up the ladder at the studios. Wednesday night I get a call that a preemptive offer's coming in from Universal. I wait, the number comes in - but the offer's good for that night only. If we don't close the deal, they're out. Luckily, the number was in the range I was hoping for. A few little deal tweaks, and we closed.

Wow! That is great news. It is like standing in a crowd of people being struck by lightning one by one. :speechless:
That was rather (what is the word?) of Universal, to make an offer that was "only good for a day". Was there any pressing need on their part to have a deal completed within 24 hours? I doubt it.
Were you tempted to sit it out and see whether an even bigger offer came along?
Well done, anyway! :D

Thanks Jeff for the run-by. The list of buyers is impressive.
Is that typical of studios to make offers that's only good for one night?

Legally, I'm sure the studio wouldn't be thrilled if I gave it out. That said, about two hundred people got it this week, so I've got to believe it's out there.

The point of a preemptive offer is "we'll offer you a premium right now over what you'll probably get if you'll take it off the market so no other buyers can get in."

Jeff,
If you don't want to mention it here feel free to PM me, but with regards to Universal, just who read it there. Was it the VP, then SVP then Pres who finally agrees to the purchase? or just VP and SVP? Im curious as to who gets to pull the trigger for a purchase. The SVP or Pres.

As far as I understand, the producers took it to VP of Production, who took it to President of Production.
