What does it mean when you see Screenplay was sold for $$ against $$$ ? is that an option?

Let's say we're talking $500,000 against $1.5 million.

$500,000 is what's paid upfront to the writer, or the total he / she shall receive upon contractual rewrites / polishes of the script.

The remaining million is usually what's received should the film actually roll before cameras.

That's very simplistic, but you get the idea.

And the writer usually only gets the full amount if he ends up with sole screenplay credit.
