Hi Pasha,
I'm thinking of applying to your contest this year.
Since everyone (including upcoming and aspiring screenwriters) must be feeling the recession pinch, we have to be careful how we spend our money. I made a list of questions which will help me and others decide how many of scripts I should send the AAA contest. Bottom line -- why should I apply?
The questions are (please note, questions 1, 2, 3 are at the end) --
4. How has your background in Hollywood prepared you to help aspiring screenwriters?
5. Do you believe that most Screenplay Contest should hire MBAs ( Marketing experts) to help promote the winners?
6. Have you ever had a conflict with a winning screenwriter or other decision makers at AAA over a script? How was it resolved?
7. What is your greatest weakness and strength when it comes to marketing the winners?
8. If I were to ask an agent or manager to describe AAA, what would they say?
9. What qualities do you feel a successful agent or manager should have?
10. If you had to create a new Screenplay Contest 3 years ago, what would be that contest be like?
11. If you had to create a new Screenplay Contest for the "new MTV generation" and "YOU TUBE generation", what would be that contest be like?
1. Tell us a bit about yourself?
2. Why should I apply to your contest?
3. What is AAA’s long long-range objective?

Hi Pasha,
I'm DEFINITELY NOT thinking of applying to your contest this year.
I don't have any questions for you since your contest has been grossly mismanaged in the past and boasts marginal credibility in the industry at best.
But enjoy reading Big Ben's entry, should he enter, and others like him!
Good luck!

AAA screenwriting contest. So many jokes here.
p.s. Ben you're the best. Not one of your posts is ever boring. Why are 1-3 at the end??? lol

Can you elaborate, N.J?
I couldn't find a past thread getting into details of the mismanagement...

Dude... now's the best time to enter, 'cause no one else will!
Sorry for the negative energy, Pasha... but it's like you're the cruise director on the Titanic. After that last debacle, AAA was the last contest I'm throwin' my money away on.

Ben, how do you find time to write screenplays when you spend so much time writing long posts? :-)
All joking aside, seriously, how do you find time to write scripts? keep it coming, never boring.

Does anyone think Ben has written a screenplay?
My latest theory is that there's leftover code in vBulletin. A leftover, unresolvable equation that must manifest itself as The One Pain In The A** every 7 years or so or else nobody will believe Done Deal is real.
Now before aan actual useful thread is derailed into rubbish, I'd love to actually know more about what's gone wrong with this contest in the past. A board search didn't turn up anything.

Is the best thing I could find. Apparently the magazine had some sort of major change in management in the middle of the AAA competition. I didn't go through the whole thing.
Also very curious why 1,2,3 come after 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11.

My beef was that they went two/three months past the due date to announce semifinalists. Of course, there was a transition in there... but still, folks paid their money, abide by the implied contract.
That, and it's been inferred that they have resorted to having office monkeys read the entries.

I love that 1,2, and 3 are not only at the end, but that there's a note preceding the list pointing out that they're at the end.

That's the funniest thing I've read all week.
Hi,
I got a private email from Pasha (http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/boards/member.php?u=4727).
Let's talk, in the forum instead.
So we can network and help all the screenwriters in the world.
You got a big respectful contest and I know you are responsible for a lot as an Office Manager for AAA.
Sorry if I was too "abrubt".
"[last lines]

I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility."
This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-man."
Thanks Pasha.
Take it easy. Be yourself.
I will apply to your contest, its a great platform and might lead to greatness. Since I only apply to selective contests, I never heard of AAA, but now that I have, I will apply. Thanks for the private email, but in the future please post all your comments in this forum for all of us to read.

Hell, for that matter, send me the money and the script and I'll highlight the typos and send back a page-by-page commentary on what (I think) works and what doesn't...
... which is the least I think a contest should offer.

Obama said in his speech yesterday:
"Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America.''
Sage advice that can be used in our contests. Comments, suggestions and criticisms noted.
Best,
Pasha

Could you pinpoint the best script competitions that hold some credibility in the industry? Thanks, Noneck.
I am on the verge of financial ruin this year with three scripts this year... :sheepskip:

Got an email from AAA, and there's an update that looks like they're trying to be proactive:
The Creative Screenwriting Professional Script Evaluation
Only $20!!!
So often a writer will receive a rejection from a contest with no clue as to where they went wrong in the judge's eyes. Now, the AAA Contest is offering an optional in-depth coverage for a small fraction of what you would normally pay!
I've long honked on hereabouts about (the lack of) something like this plenty of times... I know PAGE offers it, but it's nice to see AAA stepping up with what I think should be an option with every contest.
Twenty bucks? Tempting...
Too bad it's not in my budget right now, or I'd step in and see how it plays out.

i had issues with this contest unfortunately and won't be applying in the future. i used withoutabox and it never showed that my script was downloaded. i sent an email and she assured me it was.
then i never received notification that the contest was over and the winners were chosen. when i sent another email saying it seemed odd that i never received any sort of confirmation or notification, i asked if she could verify that my script was ever downloaded and that i was in their system. her response, that i was a bitter writer who was mad because i didn't win. wow, really? that's funny, because the exact same script i submitted got me to the finalist round of the nickelodeon fellowship.
scriptapalooza is very good about sending emails confirming they got your script, and sending notifications to the people that entered with the contest results. not sure why other contests can't manage to do something that seems pretty simple. instead, the contest insults the people who support it instead of trying to improve itself.
i'll be sticking to fellowships, and maybe try austin.

My experience with this contest was also pretty bad. They never sent any of the items that were promised to everyone who applied. I would recommend Disney and Nicholl. Austin is also good. Also heard good things about Script Savvy, which is month to month. However never applied to that one. All the others I have applied to and had smooth experiences... even if I didn't win :(
