I talked to him in Austin once and he seemed kinda dickish but did talk to me which was pretty cool, and if he wasn't kind of a dick I would have been totally disappointed. :p
I talked to him in Austin as well a few years ago. He seemed like an odd duck, funny, but odd. I think he was more interested in getting with the babes that were hanging around our table.

Yep, that's pretty odd, alright. 'Cause who wants to get laid when there's a bunch of folks waiting that want to talk Lethal Weapon?

I guess living in Austin, where the ratio is around 2 1/2 women to every man, you get a little spoiled.

I've spoken to him a few times at AFF and he was pretty nice, but one thing I've noticed is that he really does not seem to like being approached about his older work. I don't know if he interprets interest in the older films to mean you're implying that you didn't like KISS KISS, BANG BANG, or what, but he seems to prefer to either discuss his most recent work or to discuss other topics altogether.
I told him how much I loved THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT and the reaction I got from him was basically that I'd insulted him but he was trying to be polite about it.
On the other hand, once I was roaming the festival dreadfully sick with a horrible cold, and I got to a panel at which he was speaking and the last seat was right in front of him, and I spent the whole panel hacking and snuffling and worrying that he was looking at me and thinking, "Great, now I'm gonna get sick." And I spoke to him afterwards and apologized for being his own personal Typhoid Mary, and he really could not have been sweeter about it. (And later in the weekend when he saw me again, he asked how I was feeling.)
And I know someone else who spent several hours at the Driskill bar shooting the breeze with him about psychiatric drugs. So I think you just have to hit the right moment and the right topic with him.
That said, he is a great speaker at panels and seminars and stuff, and I'm sure he'll be great at this event. But it does seem like he attends AFF every year, so if you're going to spring for a plane ticket you might as well do it in the fall and catch the festival and the films and all the other great speakers.
If you're local to Austin, though, it's absolutely worth going to see him, I think.

There will never be another Shane Black. The marketplace has changed. I hope he's real happy with his money. He's part of a dying breed.
But Ben, you should attend. Make sure to ask him about Long Kiss Goodnight.

Since I live in Austin, I think I'll check this out. But, if you've never been to Texas before Ben, be careful...they do not like Canadians at all. ;)
If you do make it, let me know. I'll put together a blanket party, I mean a happy hour for you with my writers group.
Seriously, thanks Ben
Hey, I'll try to see if I can talk to him. If i go to Austin?
I'm more interested in telling him about this idea I had -- if he ever comes to Canada, Toronto.
I doubt it. Wasn't KISS GOODNIGHT filmed in Canada.
My question to Shane Black -- would you be interested in turning your documentary(see below) into a unique stage show.????
Maybe the sponsor will have his latest DVD documentary for sale...
Sounds like a gut-wrenching documentary.
Tales from the Script (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1045642/) (2009 (http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Years/2009/))
From IMDB:
"Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon"), John Carpenter ("Halloween"), Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption"), William Goldman ("The Princess Bride"), Paul Schrader ("Taxi Driver"), and dozens of other Hollywood screenwriters share hilarious anecdotes and penetrating insights in "Tales from the Script," the most comprehensive documentary ever made about screenwriting. By analyzing their triumphs and recalling their failures, the participants explain how successful writers develop the skills necessary for toughing out careers in one of the world's most competitive industries. They also reveal the untold stories behind some of the greatest screenplays ever written, describing their adventures with luminaries including Harrison Ford, Stanley Kubrick, Joel Silver, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg. The film was produced in tandem with the upcoming HarperCollins book of the same name. Written by Anonymous (http://www.imdb.com/SearchPlotWriters?Anonymous) "

Heck, most Texans don't like people from Austin... ;)

That's kinda true. Texans aren't big on the liberal enclave in their bible belt, but we stick together as one, even through the Bush years. :)
I'm scared to even fathom what a unique stage show like that might be. Would it be a puppet show by chance?

Austin isn't as liberal as they make themselves out to be, you get 10 miles from UT in any direction (well except maybe south) and you'll see just as many "God Bless George Bush" bumper stickers as anywhere else in Texas.
and the whole "keep Austin weird" crowd annoyed me to the point of moving. At least here in LA the a**holes look like a**holes.

I think compared to the rest of Texas it's extremely liberal, but to cities like San Fran and Portland, Austin doesn't even come close. I would say it's a moderately progressive town, but not a liberal bastion by any means.
I live in Round Rock, so you're spot on when you say that there are just as many Bush lovers in the area--YES, they still exist if you can believe that.
Hopefully, in the next year or two I'll be in Cali as well, :)

Sure. As long as you help me out with some of your contacts when I'm ready to market my magnum opus in April. It's a win/win for everybody, except those who have to read the screenplay. lol
