All I know about how movie theaters work, I learned from Jim Thompson. I need an update.
How do they earn money? Yes yes I know. Tickets and concessions. But what are the costs associated?
I understand the basics idea of asses in seats. But that doesn't always happen. I remember reading in a post-mortem on Gigli that theater owners were waiting for the two-weeks to pass so they could stop showing it to empty rooms. Is there a minimum contract?
Who makes the deals with distributors for the films? Is it all more or less corporate? Do theaters pay a per film (copy) per day? Is it based on showings? Do theaters pay based on tickets sold? Or is it some combination of the two?
In case it isn't clear, what I'm trying to understand is the way the money flows.
