Alameda Writers Group presents:
3/7/09: Screenwriting Contests Panel

Screenwriting contest season is fast approaching, with deadlines for several contests coming in the next few weeks. Contests can be an excellent way to earn recognition for your writing, win prizes, and help your script stand out in the crowd. To help you get ready, AWG welcomes Joy Saez of Slamdance, and Jason Zimmatore of Movie Script Contest to speak about the ins and outs of screenwriting contests.

Joy Saez has been working as an independent filmmaker since 2003. She has produced two award winning short films, First Date and Courage Doesn't Ask. She is currently in prep on the feature, The Off Hours and was on the production team for True Adolescents, starring Mark Duplass and Melissa Leo, premiering in competition at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival.

Ms. Saez has worked for the Slamdance Film Festival since 2007 and began as the Director of Writing Competitions in 2008, acting as a conduit between winning screenplays and new, independent writing talent with production companies, agents, and managers.

Movie Script Contest was founded in 2006 by Jason Zimmatore, a multi-award winning screenwriter and story analyst whose years in the trenches of story development earned him high acclaim and a keen sense of story. Jason has read thousands of scripts for the likes of Craig Anderson Productions, Turner Network Television, and more.

As he puts it, “The idea for Movie Script Contest and the Golden Brad Awards happened after I was an American Gem Contest award-winner a couple years back. I was meeting with a colleague at the time and felt there was a lack of effective screenwriting contests that did something to advance writers' careers. Soon, I was joined by industry veterans who contributed to make the contest a reality. Thus the Golden Brad Awards and Movie Script Contest were born.

Jason goes on to say, "I didn’t want anyone to enter a script into our contest only to have it disappear into the ether. That’s why the Movie Script Contest panel of judges are committed to providing excellent feedback and each have serious entertainment industry credentials."

AWG invites all to its general meetings, held the first Saturday of every month in the upstairs Auditorium of the Glendale Public Library.

Parking in the library lot is limited to one hour, but parking is available in the garage across Harvard Street from the library; get your ticket stamped at the library's front desk for three hours' validation.
