Dear Gang,

I'm a screenwriter and budding director with over a decade of experience in the creative trenches of the theater, as well as a film financier with almost a decade of experience in the business of independent cinema. While I pull my own career together, I've been looking for a way to share my business experience and creative know-how with the rest of the industry. Only a handful of people really understand money as a creative tool, and vice versa.

Finally, I think I have a unique approach. I've started reviewing undiscovered screenplays from the perspective of their development prospects, both in terms of storytelling and the business. In my opinion, every story has an audience, an ideal budget, and a path to production - so long as the script is strong. Of course, many screenplays fail to ignite because they lack the necessary craft. Others fail simply because they were the wrong tool for a specific job, or because they sought production in the wrong environment.

By matching my eye for story with my expertise in outside-the-box production solving, my hope is that each screenplay will raise a discussion and a perspective that interests seasoned execs, producers, writers, and everyone else working in film.

If I come across a screenplay that demands a positive review, I might help get a movie made that otherwise could have been overlooked. My review could even ensure that it gets made in the right way.

If not, each screenplay still offers the opportunity to see the creation and the business of film from a fresh angle.

Is that something you would read?

My first two reviews are up, and I'd love some feedback. I'm posting at http://www.threeholepundit.com.

Thanks, everybody!

I dunno - it didn't really grab me. The bit about how you want to use your 'experience, ingenuity etc' kinda sounds like someone with a big hat, but without much cattle on their IMDB page to back it up.

If the script was included as a link, it would make it more interesting, and make me more likely to drop by. At the moment I'm getting an opinion on a script I haven't read (and can't read) by someone I've never heard of who doesn't really have any qualifications or experience that I'm familiar with.
(Yes, I know you wrote a script that got made into a DVD horror film once - but that kind of experience I've got plenty of access to)

Mind you - I'm not sure I'm your target audience, anyway.

Good luck,

Mac

Thanks for the response, Mac...

Most of the work I've done isn't the type one gets screen credits for, but it's put me in a position to start making and distributing modest films theatrically, and to build on that foundation. In fact, it looks like XII will be getting limited theatrical as well - but my focus is finally on my own stuff. I'm not trying to impress anyone, but being a "creative" with that kind of business understanding is an uncommon perspective. One day soon, it will make me impressive. At the moment, it at least makes me unusual. That's what I'm hoping I can share with Three Hole Pundit.

As far as user names, the flaming on this site wore me down.

With THP and with my Sam Bailey marketing, I'm going into a phase in my life where I'm becoming much more active on the internets, doing new things, and I want as much feedback as I could get. I thought these two topics might be relevant to DD users, so I logged back in under a new name.

Being a noob makes other users more articulate in their criticisms, I find. The need to prove something is less urgent, because people assume I know nothing to begin with, being the new guy. As a result, their responses tend to be a bit more even in tone. Fine by me.

Definitely, I'll keep your post in mind - it's a good reminder to make the blog as rich and entertaining as possible. While I'm getting some very positive response, you've summed up the reasons why other readers will be hard to win over very neatly. I appreciate that!

I hope all is well with you, and that you're making good money and good progress with your work.

All the best,
T
