WINNING IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Champion Screenwriting Competition is a new contest with more than $5,000 in cash and $15,000 in prizes, sponsored by A-List Screenwriting, which is owned by Jim Mercurio. Jim ran the Screenwriting Expo Screenplay Competition for its first six years and has taught screenwriting to thousands of writers. He is a filmmaker and a nationally-ranked script consultant, with Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning and A-List clients.

In the spirit of our motto “Winning is just the beginning," many of the contest's writers will win entry into classes and receive craft and career guidance from the sponsors - some of the best teachers and consultants in the country: Julie Marsh, Julie Gray, Pilar Alessandra and author of Breakfast with Sharks' Michael Lent. Our team of mentors will prepare you by championing you and your script to help you achieve the goal of becoming a working screenwriter.

Champion Screenwriting Competition will also introduce the winners' scripts to several production companies as well as provide them pitches at PitchQ.com.

I am still in discussions with a company about offering a writing gig to the winner of the Low Budget Horror category.

When I ran the Expo contest, I was always trying ways to reward genre writing, so I thought this was an underappreciated genre and one that also allows the writer a strong visual sense and a chance to be innovative and creative within limited parameters of location and effects.

Also, the one-page coverage service may not offer mind blowing insight. I see it as a tool to conquer the subjectivity of contests: get past the first round reader and on to the judges (and often multiple readers) of the second round.

We are accepting features and shorts.

Early Bird Deadline is April 27 (http://www.championscreenwriting.com)- $40 with WAB discount.
