View Full Version : A chance to pitch to a producer of STAR TREK

Script a Wish

Heya, guys. (I'm posting this a couple different places, FYI, so apologies if I annoy ya.)

I normally don't talk about our services on the boards. It's my goal to just be a part of the communities, and I love doing that. But today I've got something that I think would be an injustice to NOT post...

One of the reasons we started Script a Wish was to level the playing field, and also to destroy the barrier between unknowns and a career as a screenwriter.

I can't tell you how many times I've had people lament to me that they know their new project could sell, if only they could pitch it to someone with the power and money to buy it.

Obviously, we help people get their script to power players by reading and then recommending them. With that process, we've already had a couple things optioned at Oscar-winning production companies.

Now, we're doing something more, and I'm thrilled we finally got this worked out: If you submit a script to us this week, you'll be entered to win a one-hour telephone pitch session with one of the producers of STAR TREK.

Yes, this is for real. Due to their crazy schedules at the moment, I can't guarantee who it will be - only that it will be one of the ACTUAL producers from Bad Robot.

(And by the way, everyone will have an equal chance to win, regardless of genre.)

If you're interested, check out www.scriptawish.com (http://www.scriptawish.com/) to send us your work and be entered to win this fantastic opportunity.

Hi script-a-wish, thanks for letting us know about this.

Can you clarify:

1) By this week, you mean ending in two days, or one week from the post of your message?

2) By submittal you mean for one of the services you offer on your site?

Thanks

He said Bad Robot, so it's for the new movie.

Yeah, but in order to potentially get the opportunity, you have to spend a load of money on your services.

Now, I'm a huge fan of everything Bad Robot does. Believe me. It is my favorite prodco, housing my favorite people in Hwood. But something seems fishy about this. Sorry.

Plus, there is a high chance that I would f*ck up royally on the phone if I somehow won. I mean...we're talking about my Hwood heroes here.

1) You can submit until Sunday for the call.
2) Yes, submit for the Studio Notes service.

I wouldn't call it "a load." Our studio notes are VERY reasonably priced, and we include for free a producer e-mail and offer to pass along any scripts we find strong enough. We've already had a couple optioned.

If the price is out of your range, I understand. I would just say, though, as a fellow Hollywood'er, that you shouldn't pass up things because there's a chance you might mess it up. One of my mentors, Joshua Ferris, told me something I'll never forget: Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone.

but yeah, the opportunity seems fishy b/c it's not clear in the offer and they used the "no guarantee" disclaimer.

Fishy?

Isn't this the same type of game scriptshark and scriptxpert plays. Yeah, you pay for coverage, but if the coverage gets a consider or recommend grade, they'll push your script on to their networks of industry friends.

Though for this contest, it seems to based on a lucky customer as opposed to a lucky contestant with a good script?

I do think coverage can be very useful for new writers. Gives them a perspective on their skills, or lack thereof, in particular, get a range of coverage, also from other writers, and feedback from anyone you know who is film or writing related.

Aim to develop your craft, don't think your carrer depends on some mad grab stab in the dark. It doesn't. It depends on your writing.

When you've got strong skills, and a good script, a number of people will tell you so.

Michael, the guy who runs Script A Wish used to run 'your-insider.' Or is the same place, just a new name...whatever.

His claim to fame is helping discover Travis B's 'A Killing on Carnival Row.'

My brother got notes from him about a year ago and I have to tell you for $70-80--he has since raised his prices--he got 10 pages of notes, an e-book on how to write and some script examples.

He pretty much told my brother how horrible the script was and that it needed a page one rewrite.

I actuallly learned a lot from his notes, even though it wasn't my story.

It's not the quickest turnaround, but the guy knows his stuff.

Let's not attack him unless we know for sure it's "fishy." At this point, we're just surmising.

And, let's not forget we also have a choice in the matter, :)

My only caution would that Script A Wish issue a caveat that the chances of submitting material worthy of pitching to said producer would be extremely low. Most scripts, as we all know, are not good. Especially by newbies like myself.

Who?

(as in, whose scripts did we get optioned)

A couple noteworthy ones recently. Mike Martin, a film student from WV, had a couple things optioned and developed at Phoenix Pictures, Kopelson Entertainment, and Valhalla Motion Pictures. Gayne Young, a high school English teacher, landed an option at Kopelson and a manager. And yes, semi-famously, Michael Ferris helped sell KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW.

If you guys are curious about our services, Gayne has kindly offered to talk to anyone who has questions. Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you his e-mail address.
