Do people steal guns? Lots of them at one time?
I have an idea about a group of thieves who steal something so big that they have to hide it underneath a building.
How reasonable does stealing a massive ammount of guns and or gold sound? Where would someone find and steal such things?

i guess they could hijack a ship on the open sea that's transporting weaponry, or construct a break-in of some sort of military compound.
for gold it would be a bank or depositary:the WTC basement was one of the world's largest gold depositaries, valued at $350 million dollars. The tenants of the WTC included the biggest financial groups in the US directly responsible for many of the biggest foreign take-overs and debts in the Third World. They included J.P. Morgan, Merril Lynch and many of the most important financial houses that exercise control over the world economy.

Police departments sometimes do their cash for weapons exchange in big cities. They take the weapons and either re-sell them at private auctions or they take them to be destroyed (turned into paperclips).
It would be plausible to knock off a shipment on its way to be destroyed or possible to hold up a gun dealer on his or her way to a show.

Gangs in Oceanside CA were arming themselves for a while by breaking into gun stores. I used the range at one of the stores that had been hit and they lost quite a bit of inventory.
The other example I can think of is there are certain National Guard outposts that have extremely light security for the large amount of ordnance light and heavy that is stored for staging or exercises.

What's the genre?
My first thought is: maybe they should steal something more original than guns or gold. Maybe something that they take apart to transport, then put back together once they've got it in the basement.
What are they planning to do with whatever they steal?
Sorry, I know you didn't ask for input on your idea per se.

Raven:
Wow, I never thought about that.
The genre is action.... actually it's more of a blend between action and drama, a bit like HEAT.
I never thought about that angle though... what could they steal that they'd need to re-assemble under the building? Actually it's a high school.
I gotta think about this. Could be juicy...
