Theres a specific term that U.S. cops use that I can not for the life of me remember.

When a case stays unsolved for a number of years it can be picked up by a cop who then researches it in his spare time. Kind of a 'pet' project. Does anybody know what this is called?

Any help appreciated :)

Thanks,

Owain.

I believe you had the title in your subject line ...but it's a bit different thant he "pet project" thing ... what i mean is - every department (at least most) have a unit that investigates old crimes ...usually the unit is within homicide and focuses specificially on homicides and it's called the "cold case unit".

Other than that I've not heard of anything where it's a "pet project" or hobby just for any guy to pick up. I could be wrong though.
