Being utterly ignorant of most sports, I need to know if the L.A. Dodgers ever play the Yankees in a routine (i.e. non-World Series) game.

They might, during interleague play. But it wouldn't happen every year. I don't know the specifics of the interleague rotation, but it might happen every 4 or 5 years during interleague games.

Can anyone expand on this? Do the Dodgers play the Mets, at least?

The American League and the National League respective winners face off in the World Series.
Early in the season interleague games are played but they're typically not that meaningful.
Usually the rivalry games played en route to the world series are between two National League or two American League teams.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Los Angeles Angels
Oakland Atletics
Texas Rangers
Seattle Mariners
Chicago White Sox
Cleveland Indians
Kansas City Royals
Minnesota Twins
Detroit Tigers
Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees
Toronto Blue Jays
Baltimore Orioles
Tampa Bay Rays
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Chicago Cubs
St. Louis Cardinals
Milwaukee Brewers
Pittsburgh Pirates
Houston Astros
Cincinnati Reds
San Diego Padres
Arizona Diamondbacks
Los Angeles Dodgers
San Francisco Giants
Colorado Rockies
Atlanta Braves
Washington Nationals
New York Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Florida Marlins

Jake, I googled *baseball yankees dodgers gameI* and this was the first hit:
http://www.ballparks.com/tickets/mlb/yankees_dodgers_tickets.htm
I hate all sports, and do not want to read it, but it looks as if it might help.

Yes, the dodgers and mets would play on a regular basis because they're both in the NL.
Yanks and dodgers would be rare because the yanks are in the AL.
Interleague play, i.e. AL and NL games that aren't the world series, are a new thing and only happens for a short window during the regular season.

Hey Jake,
The Mets will play the Dodgers every year as they are both national league teams.
Interleague play started in 1997. It happens around the middle of the season. It is real, not exhibition, but not every American League team plays every National League team every year. The way it works is that each team (I think) plays 18 interleague games a year. For the yankees they have 6 of these games reserved for games with their "geographical rival" the New York Mets. That leaves 12 other interleague games. I think they rotate between divisions each year. This year the yankees played the National League East teams in interleague play, next year it might be National League Central, and then National League west (of which the Dodgers are a part). So during the regular season the Dodgers would play the Yankees every (approximately)three years.
The reason I say approximately is that I'm not 100% sure if this is exactly right, because there are 2 more National League teams than American League teams so the numbers don't always work out exactly. There may be years when certain teams are skipped.
Hope that is not too long winded of an answer. Hope it helps.

Great. I'm all set. I do understand about how the leagues work toward playoffs, but wasn't sure about interleague play.
Thanks again for all the responses, and I now declare this thread...locked.

Yes! Another New York Giants fan! They moved to San Fran btw, but good to know you've remained a fan.

Hang on. I've never seen a football game in my life (wait--I was once invited to a superbowl party when the Patriots won the first time, and it still didn't make any sense).
I was alluding to the Yankees, of course. I suspect you know that and were playing a trick on an ignorant sot such as I.
