I have a main character who is a Donald Trump type tycoon. I want him to office in Manhattan, but live in a huge estate within daily commuting distance. Where would it be better to have the estate? I lived in Manhattan and recall that a lot of execs lived in Connecticut, but I also remember how big the estates were in the Hamptons. However, aren't most of those summer retreats more than homes for daily commutes to the city? Thanks.

Being from CT, I can help a little. Yes, the Hamptons boast summer homes for the rich, though I do think people spend time there year round. Fairfield County in CT is perhaps the wealthiest in the country; many celebrities and other rich people have mansions there, particularly in Greenwich. Check out wiki for more detail...

The wealthy also have homes in Westchester County and on Long Island, so don't rule those out.

Connecticut.

Granted, I too am a bit biased, given that I live there.

Yeah, don't think the Hamptons are daily commuting distance. For that, you'd be looking at either New Jersey (lots of mansions in northern NJ), western Fairfield Cty in CT (Greenwich, New Canaan, Stamford, Darien) or Westchester Cty, NY (Bronxville, Scarsdale, Chappaqua).

there should be a slight clarification to the question. connecticuit would be much more suited to the captains of industry to live and commute to nyc. while the hamptons is more of a 'playpen' for the rich.

hamptons is a summer villa for a guy like billy joel and versaci. but say the ceo of GE would live in greenwhich, that's his actual house.

like regis philbin lives in greenwhich, that's where he stashes his wife and has thanksgiving dinner. the hamptons is where the billionaire from monacco hangs out in the summer. imus has a 30 million dollar pad in westport ct. the list is endless. the people who communte on I-95 everyday run this country.

my childhood's friends father endowed 30 million dollars to a hospital in nyc. that guy communtes into nyc three times a week. he's a worker.

nobody lives in the hamptons, they play.

i grew up in ct. in one of those towns you guys speak of, every corner you you turn somebody owns 2 million dollar house and has a degree from wharton or yale or penn or columbia or harvard etc...
