I hope that Joe doesn't think I was "underestimating him" and I'd appreciate if you didn't misrepresent what I said. If you know what kinds of movies Millenium and Emmet Furla are doing and the space they occupy in the marketplace right now you'd see a sale to a company like that as possibly a very good thing.

Now I haven't read the script, so I can only respond to the logline. But, based on the logline, premise, and genre, it APPEARS to be something that could get bought...and made...quickly by a solid independent or mini-major. A quick path to production is the best outcome. It doesn't, to me, appear on the surface to be an obvious studio project. But, again, I haven't read it so I have no way of knowing. If it's more "The Departed" than it is "Narc", then yeah, maybe it does make sense for Sony or Warners, but based on the surface appearance it comes across as more Lionsgate than Warners.

Also, big studio based producers have so many projects on their slate, that sometimes it is a longer path than it may be with a motivated independent. So, that's why, IMO a sale to a company that is clearly making movies like yours, rather than a bigger, prestige company that isn't clearly making movies like yours is on balance possibly a better way to go.

I'm a fan of Joe's, I'm pulling for him, I would like to see him sell the script to the company most likely to make the best possible version of the movie while paying the most possible amount of money.

Dude, chill. It was all in good fun. Maybe I should have added one of these :bounce: to make my tone a little more clear.

And FWIW I agree, this seems like a perfect fit for a well-funded indie prodco like the two you mentioned.

I'd say it's more in the spirit of movies like TRAINING DAY and COLLATERAL (with a bit more teeth) than it is NARC.

Right now I'm taking payday loans and $hit so I'd be fine selling it anywhere but the ultimate goal is definitely to sell the script...

...to the company most likely to make the best possible version of the movie while paying the most possible amount of money.

Thanks again, everybody.

Firstly - congrats Joe, can't hear enough of these success stories - no matter how small or big they are. We all need to be reminded of the tangible progress out there.

...where'd everyone catch wind of this? I'm guessing a tracking board? I really have to get on exploring those and making it a routine to stay plugged in (instead of shut-up in my writing room)

Good Luck Joe!

I rented Straight Time recently and wondered why no one had updated this idea in a while. Good for you.

joe9alt
10-12-2011, 09:45 AM
It's different than STRAIGHT TIME, although I do reference NO BEAST SO FIERCE in the script - it's a book the lead is reading in one of the scenes.

In STRAIGHT TIME, Hoffman struggled to readjust to society and had people pushing him back toward his criminal ways - he didn't have his parole officer forcing him to commit crimes.

But, yeah, love STRAIGHT TIME/NO BEAST SO FIERCE.

Definitely an inspiration.

kintnerboy
10-12-2011, 10:38 AM
I know you have a different twist on it.

I just meant Hoffman's charachter was probably doomed from the beginning, but it just seemed to me that he was at least making an effort at the straight life until he ran into M. Emmit Walsh's sadistic parole officer. It's a great, underused bad guy role.

Collateral/Training Day are probably the two best thrillers of the past 10 years, so I hope yours gets made.

Good luck Joe, hope you close the deal brother.

Our scripts went out the same week in October, mine hasn't sold yet either.

What makes it worse are all the news stories declaring October as "the month the spec market came roaring back!"

Makes me feel like the fat kid at a Sadie Hawkins dance.
