Comedian Patrice O'Neal died Monday night ... after suffering a stroke back in October ... this according to his friends at the "Opie and Anthony" radio show.

O'Neal had been a staple in the comedy world for years -- and performed at the "Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen" back in September.

One of the best (if not the) 3rd mic's O&A ever had. Will be missed.

Patrice was one of the best and he will be missed. Always killed on O&A. Most infectious laugh around.

Part of Patrice's comic genius was that he became a sponge to the world around him. The universe was his toy store. That provided rich soil for his brand of funny.
