Expo Practice - The Jewelry Chase

3) You CANNOT read any scenes until you have completed yours (I think this makes sense since you won't be able to see what other have done at the Expo).

The set-up:


Your PROTAGONIST is racing through traffic with his GIRLFRIEND. He has just robbed a jewelry store. Not far behind is the owner of the store, a WOMAN. The GIRLFRIEND has no idea your PROTAGONIST has committed a crime. Also, the GIRLFRIEND is cheating on him with the WOMAN (the owner of the jewelry store). The rest is up to you.




I really hope y'all have fun with this. I tried to give you an interesting set-up with a lot of possibilities. I hope I accomplished that.

Also, I encourage everyone to comment on the scenes people post. I think getting feedback on our work will make this exercise more helpful.

I'm really looking forward to reading your scenes. I will post mine soon - I need to write it first.

EXT. FUTUREVILLE - DAY

A billow of smoke rises up into a neon nightmare of a
metropolis.

EXT. INTERSECTION

A 2303 Nissan X-TC has overturned in an intersection.
Pedestrians with bronzed-leather for skin look on.

A tin bot parts the sea and launches itself on top of the
vehicle. It tears at the guts of the SUV.

INT. NISSAN X-TC

Two occupants are mangled by metals and protruding plastics.
These two have pewter skin and bleed a thick, clear fluid.

Only a hint of gender in the synthesized voices:

Are you functional?

XX20104
I warned you not to over-clock the
navigation system.

XY20104
Fine. Add another blemish to my
record. Seems you keep those notes
loaded in RAM.

XX20104
I don't deserve that.

Progress is being made on the destruction of the SUV belly.
Light pours through the widening breach.

XX20104
This isn't a rescue, is it? What
happened at that jewelry store?

XY falls silent.

XX20104
Have you lost comm. abilities or
your courage?

XY20104
Do you really want to make our last
moments a one-sided confessional?

XX20104
You think I have nothing to
confess?

XY cranes his neck to look at the pedestrians.

XY20104
These Gantium models know nothing
of being antiquated. I just wanted
to provide you with an upgrade.

A storage box on XY's hip swooshes open. He retrieves a
diamond from within.

With a power amplifier of this
size, you could compute circles
around any Gantium.

XX20104
Oh honey. But we were saving up.
In a few years we could have--

XY20104
No, we couldn't. Today, at the
office, I was...

XX20104
Replaced. I understand now.

The floor of the SUV is almost gone.

XY20104
And your confession?

XX taps her cranial plate.

I'm with AI.

The gears on XY's face spin to form a smile.

But what will happen to it now?

Don't worry. If you place it in
emergency storage, it can be
downloaded even if we're junked.

(eyes brighten briefly)
Done.

Maybe it'll even be given the next
model body. The rumored Laudium.

XY takes XX by the hand.

The final floor panel is removed by the tin bot above. It
moves in to ravish the pewter thieves, but stops short.

TINBOT
20104? Is that you?

An awkward silence.

XY20104
You two know each other?

TINBOT
Know each other? She's the best
file swap I've ever had.

XX slaps a hand over her face. XY releases the other one.

XY20104
But you're not even a Sortium! And
a female version! How did...

XX20104
We used an adapter.

EXT. CITY STREET - RUSH HOUR

All lanes are jam-packed with bicyclists, foot scooters,
rollerbladers, and skateboarders on their way home from
work. Running amongst them in a wrinkled tuxedo, STEVIE
pulls his girlfriend ROBIN behind him.

STEVIE
Come on! She's catching up.

Robin looks back. RACHEL, a fiercely determined jewelry
store owner peddles her scooter through the traffic;
gaining on them.

ROBIN
What's going on?

Confused, Robin turns back to Rachel.

ROBIN (CONT'D)
(mouths)
What?

Rachel points to Stevie who yanks Robin forward.

ROBIN (CONT'D)
Hey!

STEVIE
Oh sorry. Listen...... I think we should
get to the justice of the peace and get
married right away.

ROBIN
I'm not going to marry you, Stevie. RED
LIGHT!

The slam to a halt and jog in place. Robin sticks out
her right arm. Stevie slams it down.

STEVIE
Don't signal. She'll know which way
we're going.

Rachel is weaving through the halted traffic.

ROBIN
We're in the turning lane.

STEVIE
The courthouse is this way.

The light turns green and Stevie pulls Robin straight;
not yielding they nearly slam into a bicyclist.

BICYCLIST
Hey! Watch where you're going.

They streamline behind him and continue running. They
turn back. Rachel has made the turn and shaking an angry
fist at them.

STEVIE
Whew! I thought we'd never shake her.

They slow down to a jog and switch back into the right
lane.

STEVIE (CONT'D)
Baby, you are so cool. I love they way
you distracted her. Taking her to the
back room and keeping her there until I
was able to get....

Stevie rips out a ring from his pocket.

STEVIE (CONT'D)
THIS!

ROBIN
You stole that?

STEVIE
We can get married now. I got the ring.

ROBIN
Are you crazy?! I'm not going to marry
you......with a stolen ring. Turn right.

They turn right.

ROBIN (CONT'D)
And what made you think I wanted to get
married anyway.

STEVIE
You've spent so much time in that jewelry
store. I.....I thought you were trying
to tell me something. Besides, a wife
can't testify against her husband in a
court of law. If you marry me.....

ROBIN
I'm not going to marry you. You can't
even afford a bicycle or even a
skateboard built for two.

Defeated, Stevie stops running. A ROLLERBLADER slams
into him; knocking him to the curb. He falls flat on his
back; protecting the ring by holding it up in the air.
Robin looks down on him, shaking her head.

SNATCH! Rachel grabs the ring.

RACHEL
(to Robin)
I can't believe you brought this loser
into my shop.

ROBIN
Rachel, it'll never happen again. I've
made my choice.

RACHEL
Come on, then.

Stevie sits up. Robin steps on the back of Rachel's
scooter and they push off.

STEVIE
Huh?!
