View Full Version : Gaining A Producing Credit

Totally hypothetical....Say a first-time screenwriter who has a spec script that has generated a six to seven figure bidding war between multiple studios/prod co.'s that just has to have it.
If the writer has this amount of demand and leverage in the negotiation, could he/she request a producing credit on the film and if so...is it even possible to get?
Any feedback would be great.

Can the writer ask for a producer credit? sure.
Is it possible to get? My best guess is that each case will be very different. It's happened in the past, it'll happen again.
Hypothetically - the writer should ask.

Let me get this straight. The writer isn't going to produce the movie, but still wants to get a producing credit?
How would this writer feel if someone who didn't write the movie got a writing credit?
What's the difference?
Producing a movie is difficult. It is hard work. So is writing a movie. If we want others to respect our credits, then we should respect theirs.
Would you want to work with a writer who tried to get credit for work they didn't do?

There are many different types of producers. A writer should go for it, but there will be some work involved, even if it's just creative input.

A writer would want a producing credit so that they could be involved in some of the creative decisions... or at least try. Without being a producer, the director;s girlfriend has more say in what happens in the story (writer's job) than the writer does. So the reason why a writer fights for a producing credit: so they can actually do their job as a writer.

Ask but don't be surprised if others don't want to give producing credits. This applies to TV as well...even when *you* option the rights to the story and then market it...which sounds like a producery function to *me*...grrr.
ASK for more than you think you'll get b/c they'll counter.
