What is a "spec" script or what is the process of selling a script on spec? What is a spec script and how is it formatted (what is in it)?

Spec is short for speculation, meaning you're basically writing a script in hopes that it sells. There are plenty of threads on this board in regards to your questions. Start with the Basics and work your way down.

What Cro said.
A "spec script" is one you write, without being paid, in hopes that you will sell it.
Different than an "assignment" or an "adaptation" or pitching a story and being paid to write it (in these cases someone hires you to write - and they pay you, just as if it were any other job).
A "spec script" may differ from the others in format only in small ways: no camera directions, no editing information, and since you don't know who is starring in the film - you need to make the characters come alive on the page (which you should be doing anyway, but it's not as critical if everyone already knows that Mel Gibson is going to star).
Read a big stack of scripts.
