"No one gives a sh-t"

My friend and I were discussing the most used phrases in the producers' lexicon and our mutual favorite - "No one gives a sh-t" - came to mind, said mostly in an effort to denounce mythology, exposition or information that could feel tangent to the story, but also used fondly in business as well.

This week I was told because of the push for international markets, "no one gives a sh-t" about dialog anymore.

What are some of your favorite catchphrases or words you've heard in meetings?

Too funny, I've gotten the international markets speech myself in a couple recent generals. It's basically just a red light over the producer's head that says "don't work with me".

Personally, the terms I'm tired of hearing are....
- "Elevated", which has become a polite way of saying "not sh*tty."
- "Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater..."
- "That feels a little 'arch' to me..."
- "The bad version is..."

"Mystery boxes"

That damn JJ TED Talk. Execs keep asking for more and more mystery boxes. It's become the pinnacle of story-telling skill.

I'm not against mystery, but it's become over-valued in comparison to dramatic irony and suspense.

Sometimes it's more powerful if the audience knows more than the characters.

Here's another one that gets me:

"The bad version is..."

The overuse of mystery is just a lazy alternative to suspense. It's little more than withholding information, or juvenile attempts at being provocative. Gee, how can I write a script that's basically ad copy... I got it! Make everything a pretentious mystery!!

How about the standard, "It doesn't meet our needs at this time."

= "It stinks."

"Assumptions are the mother of all f*** ups."

And, this is one someone I know got (from Oliver Stone):

"Needs 15% more sand."
