Hi I am a new user/screenwriter and was wondering how many screenwriters get "percentage points" of a film's box office after expenses. If you really believe in your script this could be worth more than the original sale price ala Basic Instinct. I know songwriters follow this code, How about screenwriters?
How often do screenwriter get royalties??

Re: How often do screenwriter get royalties??
I know that many Guilds around the world enforce required net percentage points (backend) for the screenwriter, so it's not unusual at all. What is unusual is making any money out of them. Hardly any films EVER make a real net profit on paper - somehow, some way, it always ends up with a zero balance.
Under my option deal I've been offered 5% backend, which is apparently quite generous. My agent calls them "monkey points". Nice to have just in case, but it so rarely comes to anything that they have virtually no value.
As in 5% of nothing is still nothing.
In other words, you ask for money upfront if you want any money at all.

Hey, I got a check for foreign residuals earlier this year. It was, like, $25. We went hog wild and splurged at Mickey D's.
