Re: La La Land

Another film that nobody wanted to make. Chazelle had to shelve it, create WHIPLASH and see it become successful before this could get made. And now LA LA LAND looks set to sweep the Oscars.

Re: Reader's comment

If you want to get somewhere as a writer, you really can't rely on programs like spellcheck. As you've discovered, using those programs has put you in a position where you still have multiple readers...

Re: Based off a true story vs. Inspired by true events

FARGO was a "true story" that never actually happened. I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if it's your own story. You can put "This all totally 100% happened, I swear" if you want.

Re: Pay To Play

I find the whole idea to be highly unethical. It preys upon people's hopes and dreams.

Not many businesses last when 99.9% of their customers come away with nothing for their money. But these can,...

Re: TV Pilot Endings

Pretty straightforward that a procedural is easier to judge based only on a single episode (in this case the pilot) since they're intended to be viewable as a stand-alone for syndication purposes....

Re: Development at Distributor

There are distribution companies that also produce.

If the specific example you're talking about does not in fact produce, then the development person is probably involved with rearranging the...

Re: Anyone switch from large management co to small?

I can definitively tell you that most management clients do not get big checks coming in.

Of course, you will be at the bottom of your manager's list if you haven't made him/her any money yet. Not...

Re: Strange feedback

Another nail in my old boss's coffin. He swore to me that only actors smoked these days.

Unfortunately, the whole "I don't read scripts" thing is pretty prevalent. For example, Brian Grazer does...

Re: What to do when reps won't take our your projects?

Should probably say something along the lines of, "Don't sugarcoat it. Why don't you want to send these out?"

I worked for a producer who phrased it to me as he, "only has so many bullets." As in,...

Re: Dramas Wanted (Pitching Season Slow Start)

As meaningful as the articles proclaiming doom when the box office brings in less money than the year before. Which is to say meaningless.

Re: Stranger Things

And according to the guys who created the show, it was passed on by 15-20 different places before Netflix bought it.

Re: Good scripts are hard to come by? Not according to Aaron Sorkin.

In the interview currently making the rounds, Clint Eastwood makes the same general point about actors. There are many good ones out there that just never caught the right break. Nobody knows...

Re: Max Landis is... writing a Pepe Le Pew script

"Malodorous scent."

Jesus Christ. I hope the person who wrote that didn't get paid for it.

Re: Advice on Converting a Feature to a Pilot

You could go with a teaser. Or you could use a tag, which is the same basic premise as a teaser or cold open, just as the ending point instead of the beginning. MODERN FAMILY uses tags. Those...

Re: Zero interest in joinging the writers' room... just want to sell spec pilots

There are a number of people who do something along these lines. Chuck Lorre, Greg Berlanti, Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, etc.

Although if you were to delve into it, you might find that for the most...

Re: Naming Characters

For whatever reason, I find this to be the hardest part of writing.

I think it's because in most cases the character's name really just doesn't matter. How many movies are there where the name is...

Re: Rick Marcelli

Ha, yeah. Everyone in LA is a writer/producer/director/actor/singer/manager/realtor. But they really drive for Uber.

Re: Trip to Cali -- Advice Please

Uber works just fine. There are thousands of Uber drivers so you never have to wait more than five minutes for a car to show up. At least if you're in the general "middle" area of LA. The time...

Re: What is voice?

I think this also begs the question; is voice actually necessary for a specific movie or TV show to be successful?

I understand why a rep wants to find a writer with a voice. But does, for example,...

Re: Max Landis article on Deadline

I'll just point out again that Landis was approached to write CHRONICLE by the director (Trank) who was then able to get it greenlit. Without that connection, there's no CHRONICLE. Fairly safe to say...

Re: Showrunners reading shorts vs pilots

It does happen. I don't know that I'd recommend it as an active strategy though.

Unless of course you're just better at writing shorts or plays. In which case you're probably following the wrong...

What is voice?

I'm sure this isn't the first time this subject has been broached. But I think it makes for an interesting topic of discussion, so what the hell.

From my viewpoint, voice is simply what makes a...

Re: Anybody submitted to Austin this year?

The obvious advantage Austin has over Nicholl is that they have more categories, beyond just features.

How people view the individual competitions is really impossible to qualify, because it's...
